47*The word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah the prophet aagainst the Philistines, bbefore that Pharaoh smote †Gaza.
2Thus saith the Lord;
Behold, cwaters rise up dout of the north,
And shall be an overflowing flood,
And shall overflow the land, and †all that is therein;
The city, and them that dwell therein:
Then the men shall cry,
And all the inhabitants of the land shall howl.
3At the noise of the stamping of the hoofs of ehis strong horses,
At fthe rushing of his chariots,
And at the rumbling of his wheels,
The fathers shall not glook back to their children
For feebleness of hands;
4Because of the day that cometh to spoil all hthe Philistines,
And to cut off from hiTyrus and Zidon every helper that remaineth:
For the Lord will spoil the Philistines,
kThe remnant of †the country of lCaphtor.
5mBaldness is come upon Gaza;
nAshkelon ois cut off with the remnant of their valley:
How long wilt thou pcut thyself?
6O qthou sword of the Lord, how long will it be ere thou be quiet?
†Put up thyself into qthy scabbard, rrest, and sbe still.
7†How can it be quiet, seeing tthe Lord hath given it a charge
Against nAshkelon, and against the sea shore? there hath he uappointed it.
48*aAgainst Moab thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel;
Woe unto bNebo! for it is spoiled:
cKiriathaim is confounded and taken:
||Misgab is confounded and ccdismayed.
2There shall be no more praise of Moab:
In dHeshbon they have devised evil against it;
Come, and let us cut it off efrom being a nation.
Also thou shalt ||be cut down, O fMadmen;
The sword shall †pursue thee.
3gA voice of crying shall be from hHoronaim,
Spoiling and great destruction.
4Moab is destroyed;
Her little ones have caused a cry to be heard.
5For iin the going up of Luhith
†Continual weeping shall go up;
For iin the going down of hHoronaim
The enemies have heard ga cry of destruction.
6jFlee, save your lives,
And be like ||the heath in the wilderness.
7For kbecause thou hast trusted in thy works and in thy treasures,
Thou shalt also be taken:
And lChemosh shall go forth into captivity
With mhis priests and his princes together.
8And nthe spoiler shall come upon every city,
And no city shall escape:
The valley also shall perish,
And othe plain nshall be destroyed,
As the Lord hath spoken.
9pGive wings unto Moab,
That it may flee and get away:
For the cities thereof qshall be desolate,
rWithout any to dwell therein.
10sCursed be he that doeth tthe work of the Lord ||udeceitfully,
And cursed be he that keepeth back his sword from blood.
11Moab vhath been at ease from his youth,
And he hath settled won his lees,
And hath not been emptied from vessel to vessel,
Neither hath he gone into captivity:
Therefore his taste †remained in him,
And his scent is not changed.
12Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the Lord,
That I will send unto him xwanderers, that shall xcause him to wander,
And shall empty his vessels, and ybreak their zbottles.
13And Moab shall be ashamed of Chemosh,
As athe house of Israel was ashamed of bBeth-el their confidence.
14How say ye, We are mighty and strong men for the war?
15cMoab is spoiled, and gone up out of her cities,
And †his chosen young men dare gone down to the slaughter,
eSaith the King, whose name is the Lord of hosts.
16The calamity of Moab is near to come,
And his affliction hasteth fast.
17All ye that are about him, bemoan him;
And all ye that know his name,
fSay, How is gthe strong staff broken,
And the beautiful hrod!
18iThou daughter that dost inhabit kDibon,
Come down from thy glory, and isit lin thirst;
For cthe spoiler of Moab shall come upon thee,
And he shall destroy thy strong holds.
Stand by the way, and nespy;
Ask him that fleeth, and her that escapeth,
And say, What is done?
20Moab is confounded; for ccit is broken down:
oHowl and cry;
Tell ye it in pArnon, that cMoab is spoiled,
21And judgment is come upon qthe plain country;
Upon Holon, and upon rsJahazah, and upon sMephaath,
22And upon kDibon, and upon tNebo, and upon uBeth-diblathaim,
23And upon tKiriathaim, and upon Beth-gamul, and upon vwBeth-meon,
24And upon xKerioth, and upon yBozrah,
And upon all the cities of the land of Moab, far or near.
25zThe horn of Moab is cut off,
And ahis arm is broken, saith the Lord.
26bMake ye him drunken: bbfor he magnified himself against the Lord:
Moab also shall wallow bin his vomit,
And he also shall be cin derision.
27For ccwas not Israel a derision unto thee?
dWas he found among thieves?
For since thou spakest of him, thou ||skippedst for joy.
28O ye that dwell in Moab, eleave the cities, and fdwell in gthe rock,
And be flike ethe dove that ghmaketh her nest in the sides of the hole’s mouth.
29iWe have heard the pride of Moab, (he is exceeding proud)
His loftiness, and his arrogancy, and his pride, and the haughtiness of his heart.
30I know ihis wrath, saith the Lord; but it shall not be so;
||ikHis lies shall not so effect it.
31Therefore lwill I howl for Moab,
And I will cry out lfor all Moab;
mMine heart nshall mourn for the men of oKir-heres.
32pO vine of qSibmah, I will weep for thee with the weeping of rJazer:
sThy plants are gone over the sea,
tThey reach even to the sea of Jazer:
The spoiler is fallen upon thy summer fruits and upon thy vintage.
33tAnd ujoy and gladness is taken from the plentiful field, and from the land of Moab;
And tI have caused wine to fail from the winepresses:
tNone shall tread with shouting;
uTheir shouting shall be no shouting.
34vFrom the cry of Heshbon even unto Elealeh,
And even unto vJahaz, have they uttered their voice,
From wZoar even unto Horonaim,
As xan heifer of three years old:
For ythe waters also of Nimrim shall be †desolate.
35Moreover I will cause to cease in Moab, saith the Lord, him that offereth in zthe high places,
And him that burneth incense to his gods.
36Therefore mmine heart nshall sound for Moab like pipes,
And mmine heart shall sound like pipes for the men of Kir-heres:
Because athe riches that he hath gotten are perished.
37For bevery head shall be cbald,
Upon all the hands shall be ccuttings,
And bupon the loins dsackcloth.
38There shall be lamentation generally bupon all the housetops of Moab, band in the streets thereof:
For I have broken Moab like ea vessel wherein is no pleasure, saith the Lord.
39They shall howl, saying, How is it broken down!
How hath Moab fturned the †back with shame!
So shall Moab be ga derision and a dismaying to all them about him.
40For thus saith the Lord;
Behold, hhe ishall fly as an eagle,
iAnd kshall spread his wings over Moab.
41||lKerioth is taken, and the strong holds are surprised,
And mthe mighty men’s hearts in Moab at that day shall be
As the heart of na woman in her pangs.
42And Moab shall be destroyed ofrom being a people,
pBecause he hath magnified himself against the Lord.
43qrFear, and rthe pit, and the snare, shall be upon thee,
O inhabitant of Moab, saith the Lord.
44qsHe that fleeth from the fear shall fall into the pit;
qAnd he that getteth up out of the pit shall be taken in the snare:
tFor I will bring upon it, even upon Moab, tthe year of their visitation, saith the Lord.
45They that fled stood under uthe shadow of vHeshbon because of the force:
But wa fire shall come forth out of Heshbon,
And wa flame from the midst of xSihon,
And shall devour ythe corner of Moab,
And the crown of the head of the †tumultuous ones.
46aWoe be unto thee, O Moab!
The people of Chemosh perisheth:
For thy sons are taken †captives,
And thy daughters captives.
47bYet cdwill I bring again the captivity of Moab
ceIn the latter days, saith the Lord.
fThus far is the judgment of Moab.
49||aConcerning the Ammonites, thus saith the Lord;
Hath Israel no sons? hath he no heir?
Why then doth ||their king inherit bGad,
And his people dwell in his cities?
2Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the Lord,
That I will cause can alarm of war to be heard in dRabbah of the Ammonites;
And it shall be a desolate eheap,
And fher daughters shall be burned with fire:
Then shall gIsrael be heir unto them that were his heirs, saith the Lord.
3Howl, O ggHeshbon, for hAi is spoiled:
Cry, ye daughters of dRabbah, igird you with sackcloth;
Lament, and jrun to and fro by the hedges;
For ||their king shall go into captivity,
And khis priests and his princes together.
4Wherefore gloriest thou in the valleys,
||Thy flowing valley, lO backsliding daughter?
mThat trusted in her treasures, nsaying, oWho shall come unto me?
5Behold, pI will bring a fear upon thee, saith the Lord God of hosts,
From all those that be about thee;
And ye shall be driven out every man right forth;
And qnone shall gather up him that wandereth.
6And rafterward I will bring again the captivity of the children of Ammon, saith the Lord.
7sConcerning Edom, thus saith the Lord of hosts;
vIs counsel perished from the prudent?
Is their wisdom vanished?
wDwell deep, O inhabitants of xDedan;
For I will bring the calamity of Esau upon him,
yThe time that I will visit him.
9zIf grapegatherers come to thee, would they not leave some agleaning grapes?
zIf thieves by night, they will destroy †till they have enough.
10But bI have made Esau bare,
I have uncovered his secret places,
And he shall not be able to hide himself:
His seed is spoiled, and his brethren, and his neighbours, and che is not.
11Leave thy fatherless children, I dwill preserve them alive;
And let thy widows trust in me.
12For thus saith the Lord;
Behold, they whose judgment was enot to drink of the cup have assuredly drunken;
And fart thou he that shall altogether go unpunished?
Thou shalt not go unpunished, but thou shalt surely drink of it.
13For gI have sworn by myself, saith the Lord,
That hBozrah shall become ia desolation,
kA reproach, a waste, and la curse;
And all the cities thereof shall be mperpetual wastes.
14nI have oheard a rumour from the Lord,
And an ambassador is sent unto the heathen, oosaying,
Gather ye together,
And come against her, and rise up to the battle.
15For, lo, I will make thee small among the heathen,
And despised among men.
16Thy terribleness hath…
