Jesus Changes Water Into Wine
2On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee.v Jesus’ motherw was there, 2and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”
4“Woman,ax why do you involve me?”y Jesus replied. “My hourz has not yet come.”
5His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”a
6Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing,b each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.b
7Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.
8Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.”
They did so, 9and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine.c He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”
11What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signsd through which he revealed his glory;e and his disciples believed in him.f
12After this he went down to Capernaumg with his motherh and brothersi and his disciples. There they stayed for a few days.
Jesus Clears the Temple Courts
2:14–16pp—Mt 21:12,13; Mk 11:15–17; Lk 19:45,46
13When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover,j Jesus went up to Jerusalem.k 14In the temple courts he found people selling cattle, sheep and doves,l and others sitting at tables exchanging money.m 15So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple courts, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. 16To those who sold doves he said, “Get these out of here! Stop turning my Father’s housen into a market!” 17His disciples remembered that it is written: “Zeal for your house will consume me.”co
18The Jewsp then responded to him, “What signq can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?”r
19Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.”s
20They replied, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?” 21But the temple he had spoken of was his body.t 22After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said.u Then they believed the scripturev and the words that Jesus had spoken.
23Now while he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Festival,w many people saw the signsx he was performing and believedy in his name.d 24But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, for he knew all people. 25He did not need any testimony about mankind,z for he knew what was in each person.a
Jesus Teaches Nicodemus
3Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemusb who was a member of the Jewish ruling council.c 2He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi,d we knowe that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signsf you are doing if God were not with him.”g
3Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.a”h
4“How can someone be born when they are old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!”
5Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit.i 6Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spiritb gives birth to spirit.j 7You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘Youc must be born again.’ 8The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”dk
9“How can this be?”l Nicodemus asked.
10“You are Israel’s teacher,”m said Jesus, “and do you not understand these things? 11Very truly I tell you, we speak of what we know,n and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony.o 12I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things? 13No one has ever gone into heavenp except the one who came from heavenq—the Son of Man.er 14Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness,s so the Son of Man must be lifted up,ft 15that everyone who believesu may have eternal life in him.”gv
16For God so lovedw the world that he gavex his one and only Son,y that whoever believesz in him shall not perish but have eternal life.a 17For God did not send his Son into the worldb to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.c 18Whoever believes in him is not condemned,d but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.e 19This is the verdict: Lightf has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.g 20Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed.h 21But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.
John Testifies Again About Jesus
22After this, Jesus and his disciples went out into the Judean countryside, where he spent some time with them, and baptized.i 23Now Johnj also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because there was plenty of water, and people were coming and being baptized. 24(This was before John was put in prison.)k 25An argument developed between some of John’s disciples and a certain Jew over the matter of ceremonial washing.l 26They came to John and said to him, “Rabbi,m that man who was with you on the other side of the Jordan—the one you testifiedn about—look, he is baptizing, and everyone is going to him.”
27To this John replied, “A person can receive only what is given them from heaven. 28You yourselves can testify that I said, ‘I am not the Messiah but am sent ahead of him.’o 29The bride belongs to the bridegroom.p The friend who attends the bridegroom waits and listens for him, and is full of joy when he hears the bridegroom’s voice. That joy is mine, and it is now complete.q 30He must become greater; I must become less.”h
31The one who comes from abover is above all; the one who is from the earth belongs to the earth, and speaks as one from the earth.s The one who comes from heaven is above all. 32He testifies to what he has seen and heard,t but no one accepts his testimony.u 33Whoever has accepted it has certified that God is truthful. 34For the one whom God has sentv speaks the words of God, for Godi gives the Spiritw without limit. 35The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in his hands.x 36Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life,y but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them.
Jesus Talks With a Samaritan Woman
4Now Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that he was gaining and baptizing more disciples than Johnz—2although in fact it was not Jesus who baptized, but his disciples. 3So he left Judeaa and went back once more to Galilee.
4Now he had to go through Samaria.b 5So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph.c 6Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon.
7When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?”d 8(His disciples had gone into the towne to buy food.)
9The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritanf woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.a)
10Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”g
11“Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? 12Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the wellh and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?”
13Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst.i Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of waterj welling up to eternal life.”k
15The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirstyl and have to keep coming here to draw water.”
16He told her, “Go, call your husband and come back.”
17“I have no husband,” she replied.
Jesus said to her, “You are right when you say you have no husband. 18The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.”
19“Sir,” the woman said, “I can see that you are a prophet.m 20Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain,n but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.”o
21“Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe me, a time is comingp when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.q 22You Samaritans worship what you do not know;r we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews.s 23Yet a time is coming and has now comet when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spiritu and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24God is spirit,v and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”
25The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ)w “is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.”
26Then Jesus declared, “I, the one speaking to you—I am he.”x
The Disciples Rejoin Jesus
27Just then his disciples returnedy and were surprised to find him talking with a woman. But no one asked, “What do you want?” or “Why are you talking with her?”
28Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people, 29…
