Chapter 9
The Fifth Trumpet—the Bottomless Pit
1Then the afifth angel sounded, and I saw a bstar from heaven which had fallen to the earth; and the ckey of the 1dbottomless pit was given to him.
2He opened the 1bottomless pit, and asmoke went up out of the pit, like the smoke of a great furnace; and bthe sun and the air were darkened by the smoke of the pit.
3Then out of the smoke came alocusts 1upon the earth, and power was given them, as the bscorpions of the earth have power.
4They were told not to ahurt the bgrass of the earth, nor any green thing, nor any tree, but only the men who do not have the cseal of God on their foreheads.
5And 1they were not permitted to kill 2anyone, but to torment for afive months; and their torment was like the torment of a bscorpion when it 3stings a man.
6And in those days amen will seek death and will not find it; they will long to die, and death flees from them.
7The 1aappearance of the locusts was like horses prepared for battle; and on their heads appeared to be crowns like gold, and their faces were like the faces of men.
8They had hair like the hair of women, and their ateeth were like the teeth of lions.
9They had breastplates like breastplates of iron; and the asound of their wings was like the sound of chariots, of many horses rushing to battle.
10They have tails like ascorpions, and stings; and in their btails is their power to hurt men for cfive months.
11They have as king over them, the angel of the aabyss; his name in bHebrew is 1cAbaddon, and in the Greek he has the name 2Apollyon.
12aThe first woe is past; behold, two woes are still coming after these things.
The Sixth Trumpet—Army from the East
13Then the sixth angel sounded, and I heard 1a voice from the 2four ahorns of the bgolden altar which is before God,
14one saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release the afour angels who are bound at the bgreat river Euphrates.”
15And the four angels, who had been prepared for the hour and day and month and year, were areleased, so that they would kill a bthird of 1mankind.
16The number of the armies of the horsemen was atwo hundred million; bI heard the number of them.
17And 1this is how I saw ain the vision the horses and those who sat on them: the riders had breastplates the color of fire and of hyacinth and of 2bbrimstone; and the heads of the horses are like the heads of lions; and cout of their mouths proceed fire and smoke and brimstone.
18A athird of 1mankind was killed by these three plagues, by the bfire and the smoke and the 2brimstone which proceeded out of their mouths.
19For the power of the horses is in their mouths and in their tails; for their tails are like serpents and have heads, and with them they do harm.
20The rest of 1mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, adid not repent of bthe works of their hands, so as not to cworship demons, and dthe idols of gold and of silver and of brass and of stone and of wood, which can neither see nor hear nor walk;
21and they adid not repent of their murders nor of their bsorceries nor of their cimmorality nor of their thefts.
Chapter 10
The Angel and the Little Book
1I saw another astrong angel bcoming down out of heaven, clothed with a cloud; and the crainbow was upon his head, and dhis face was like the sun, and his efeet like pillars of fire;
2and he had in his hand a alittle book which was open. He placed bhis right foot on the sea and his left on the land;
3and he cried out with a loud voice, aas when a lion roars; and when he had cried out, the bseven peals of thunder 1uttered their voices.
4When the seven peals of thunder had spoken, aI was about to write; and I bheard a voice from heaven saying, “cSeal up the things which the seven peals of thunder have spoken and do not write them.”
5Then the angel whom I saw standing on the sea and on the land alifted up his right hand to heaven,
6aand swore by bHim who lives forever and ever, cwho created heaven and the things in it, and the earth and the things in it, and the sea and the things in it, that dthere will be delay no longer,
7but in the days of the voice of the aseventh angel, when he is about to sound, then bthe mystery of God is finished, as He 1preached to His servants the prophets.
8Then athe voice which I heard from heaven, I heard again speaking with me, and saying, “Go, take bthe 1book which is open in the hand of the angel who stands on the sea and on the land.”
9So I went to the angel, telling him to give me the little book. And he *said to me, “aTake it and eat it; it will make your stomach bitter, but in your mouth it will be sweet as honey.”
10I took the little book out of the angel’s hand and ate it, and in my mouth it was sweet as honey; and when I had eaten it, my stomach was made bitter.
11And athey *said to me, “You must bprophesy again concerning cmany peoples and nations and tongues and dkings.”
Chapter 11
The Two Witnesses
1Then there was given me a 1ameasuring rod like a staff; 2and bsomeone said, “Get up and measure the 3temple of God and the altar, and those who worship in it.
2“1Leave out the acourt which is outside the 2temple and do not measure it, for bit has been given to the nations; and they will tread under foot cthe holy city for dforty-two months.
3“And I will grant authority to my two awitnesses, and they will prophesy for btwelve hundred and sixty days, clothed in csackcloth.”
4These are the atwo olive trees and the two lampstands that stand before the Lord of the earth.
5And if anyone wants to harm them, afire flows out of their mouth and devours their enemies; so if anyone wants to harm them, bhe must be killed in this way.
6These have the power to ashut up the sky, so that rain will not fall during bthe days of their prophesying; and they have power over the waters to cturn them into blood, and dto strike the earth with every plague, as often as they desire.
7When they have finished their testimony, athe beast that comes up out of the babyss will cmake war with them, and overcome them and kill them.
8And their dead bodies will lie in the street of the agreat city which 1mystically is called bSodom and cEgypt, where also their Lord was crucified.
9Those from athe peoples and tribes and tongues and nations will look at their dead 1bodies for three and a half days, and 2bwill not permit their dead bodies to be laid in a tomb.
10And athose who dwell on the earth will rejoice over them and celebrate; and they will bsend gifts to one another, because these two prophets tormented those who dwell on the earth.
11But after the three and a half days, athe breath of life from God came into them, and they stood on their feet; and great fear fell upon those who were watching them.
12And they heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, “aCome up here.” Then they bwent up into heaven in the cloud, and their enemies watched them.
13And in that hour there was a great aearthquake, and a tenth of the city fell; 1seven thousand people were killed in the earthquake, and the rest were terrified and bgave glory to the cGod of heaven.
14The second awoe is past; behold, the third woe is coming quickly.
The Seventh Trumpet—Christ’s Reign Foreseen
15Then the aseventh angel sounded; and there were bloud voices in heaven, saying,
“cThe kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of dHis 1Christ; and eHe will reign forever and ever.”
16And the twenty-four elders, who asit on their thrones before God, bfell on their faces and worshiped God,
17saying,
“We give You thanks, aO Lord God, the Almighty, who are and who were, because You have taken Your great power and have begun to breign.
18“And athe nations were enraged, and bYour wrath came, and cthe time came for the dead to be judged, and the time to 1reward Your dbond-servants the prophets and the 2saints and those who fear Your name, ethe small and the great, and to destroy those who destroy the earth.”
19And athe 1temple of God which is in heaven was opened; and bthe ark of His covenant appeared in His temple, and there were flashes of clightning and sounds and peals of thunder and an earthquake and a dgreat 2hailstorm.
Chapter 12
The Woman, Israel
1A great asign appeared bin heaven: ca woman dclothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars;
2and she was with child; and she acried out, being in labor and in pain to give birth.
The Red Dragon, Satan
3Then aanother sign appeared in heaven: and behold, a great red bdragon having cseven heads and dten horns, and on his heads were eseven diadems.
4And his tail *swept away a athird of the stars of heaven and bthrew them to the earth. And the cdragon stood before the woman who was about to give birth, so that when she gave birth dhe might devour her child.
The Male Child, Christ
5And ashe gave birth to a son, a male child, who is to 1brule all the 2nations with a rod of iron; and her child was ccaught up to God and to His throne.
6Then the woman fled into the wilderness where she *had a place prepared by God, so that there 1she would be nourished for aone thousand two hundred and sixty days.
The Angel, Michael
7And there was war in heaven, aMichael and his angels waging war with the bdragon. The dragon and chis angels waged war,
8and they were not strong enough, and there was no longer a place found for them in heaven.
9And the great adragon was thrown down, the bserpent of old who is called the devil and cSatan, who ddeceives the whole 1world; he was ethrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.
10Then I heard aa loud voice in heaven, saying,
“Now the bsalvation, and the power, and the kingdom of our God and the authority of His Christ have come, for the caccuser of our brethren has been thrown down, he who accuses them before our God day and night.
11“And they aovercame him because of bthe blood of the Lamb and because of cthe word of their testimony, and they ddid not love their life even 1when faced with death.

- *A star (*) is used to mark verbs that are historical presents in the Greek which have been translated with an English past tense in order to conform to modern usage. The translators recognized that in some contexts the present tense seems more unexpected and unjustified to the English reader than a past tense would have been. But Greek authors frequently used the present tense for the sake of heightened vividness, thereby transporting their readers in imagination to the actual scene at the time of occurence. However, the translators felt that it would be wise to change these historical presents to English past tenses.
