Psalm 33–34

Psalm 33

¹Sing joyfully^a to the Lord, you righteous;

it is fitting^b for the upright^c to praise him.

²Praise the Lord with the harp;^d

make music to him on the ten-stringed lyre.^e

³Sing to him a new song;^f

play skillfully, and shout for joy.^g

⁴For the word of the Lord is right^h and true;ⁱ

he is faithful^j in all he does.

⁵The Lord loves righteousness and justice;^k

the earth is full of his unfailing love.^l

⁶By the word^m of the Lord the heavens were made,ⁿ

their starry host^o by the breath of his mouth.

⁷He gathers the waters^p of the sea into jars^a;^q

he puts the deep into storehouses.

⁸Let all the earth fear the Lord;^r

let all the people of the world^s revere him.^t

⁹For he spoke, and it came to be;

he commanded,^u and it stood firm.

¹⁰The Lord foils^v the plans^w of the nations;^x

he thwarts the purposes of the peoples.

¹¹But the plans of the Lord stand firm^y forever,

the purposes^z of his heart through all generations.

¹²Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord,^a

the people he chose^b for his inheritance.^c

¹³From heaven the Lord looks down^d

and sees all mankind;^e

¹⁴from his dwelling place^f he watches

all who live on earth—

¹⁵he who forms^g the hearts of all,

who considers everything they do.^h

¹⁶No king is saved by the size of his army;ⁱ

no warrior escapes by his great strength.

¹⁷A horse^j is a vain hope for deliverance;

despite all its great strength it cannot save.

¹⁸But the eyes^k of the Lord are on those who fear him,

on those whose hope is in his unfailing love,^l

¹⁹to deliver them from death^m

and keep them alive in famine.ⁿ

²⁰We wait^o in hope for the Lord;

he is our help and our shield.

²¹In him our hearts rejoice,^p

for we trust in his holy name.^q

²²May your unfailing love^r be with us, Lord,

even as we put our hope in you.

Psalm 34^a,^b

Of David. When he pretended to be insane^s before Abimelek, who drove him away, and he left.

¹I will extol the Lord at all times;^t

his praise will always be on my lips.

²I will glory^u in the Lord;

let the afflicted hear and rejoice.^v

³Glorify the Lord^w with me;

let us exalt^x his name together.

⁴I sought the Lord,^y and he answered me;

he delivered^z me from all my fears.

⁵Those who look to him are radiant;^a

their faces are never covered with shame.^b

⁶This poor man called, and the Lord heard him;

he saved him out of all his troubles.^c

⁷The angel of the Lord^d encamps around those who fear him,

and he delivers^e them.

⁸Taste and see that the Lord is good;^f

blessed is the one who takes refuge^g in him.

⁹Fear the Lord,^h you his holy people,

for those who fear him lack nothing.ⁱ

¹⁰The lions may grow weak and hungry,

but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.^j

¹¹Come, my children, listen^k to me;

I will teach you^l the fear of the Lord.^m

¹²Whoever of you loves lifeⁿ

and desires to see many good days,

¹³keep your tongue^o from evil

and your lips from telling lies.^p

¹⁴Turn from evil and do good;^q

seek peace^r and pursue it.

¹⁵The eyes of the Lord^s are on the righteous,^t

and his ears are attentive^u to their cry;

¹⁶but the face of the Lord is against^v those who do evil,^w

to blot out their name^x from the earth.

¹⁷The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears^y them;

he delivers them from all their troubles.

¹⁸The Lord is close^z to the brokenhearted^a

and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

¹⁹The righteous person may have many troubles,^b

but the Lord delivers him from them all;^c

²⁰he protects all his bones,

not one of them will be broken.^d

²¹Evil will slay the wicked;^e

the foes of the righteous will be condemned.

²²The Lord will rescue^f his servants;

no one who takes refuge^g in him will be condemned.
