Isaiah and His Children as Signs

The Lord said to me, “Take a large scrolla and write on it with an ordinary pen: Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz.”b So I called in Uriahc the priest and Zechariah son of Jeberekiah as reliable witnessesd for me. Then I made love to the prophetess,e and she conceived and gave birth to a son.f And the Lord said to me, “Name him Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz.g Before the boy knowsh how to say ‘My father’ or ‘My mother,’ the wealth of Damascusi and the plunder of Samaria will be carried off by the king of Assyria.j”

The Lord spoke to me again:

“Because this people has rejectedk

the gently flowing waters of Shiloahl

and rejoices over Rezin

and the son of Remaliah,m

therefore the Lord is about to bring against them

the mighty floodwatersn of the Euphrates—

the king of Assyriao with all his pomp.p

It will overflow all its channels,

run over all its banksq

and sweep on into Judah, swirling over it,r

passing through it and reaching up to the neck.

Its outspread wingss will cover the breadth of your land,

Immanuel!”t

Raise the war cry,u you nations, and be shattered!v

Listen, all you distant lands.

Preparew for battle, and be shattered!

Prepare for battle, and be shattered!

Devise your strategy, but it will be thwarted;x

propose your plan, but it will not stand,y

for God is with us.z

This is what the Lord says to me with his strong hand upon me,a warning me not to followb the way of this people:

“Do not call conspiracyc

everything this people calls a conspiracy;

do not fear what they fear,d

and do not dread it.e

The Lord Almighty is the one you are to regard as holy,f

he is the one you are to fear,g

he is the one you are to dread.h

He will be a holy place;i

for both houses of Israel he will be

a stonej that causes people to stumblek

and a rock that makes them fall.l

And for the people of Jerusalem he will be

a trap and a snare.m

Many of them will stumble;n

they will fall and be broken,

they will be snared and captured.”

Bind up this testimony of warningo

and sealp up God’s instruction among my disciples.

I will waitq for the Lord,

who is hidingr his face from the house of Jacob.

I will put my trust in him.s

Here am I, and the children the Lord has given me.t We are signsu and symbolsv in Israel from the Lord Almighty, who dwells on Mount Zion.w

The Darkness Turns to Light

When someone tells you to consulta mediums and spiritists,b who whisper and mutter,c should not a people inquired of their God? Why consult the dead on behalf of the living? Consult God’s instructione and the testimony of warning.f If anyone does not speak according to this word, they have no lightg of dawn. Distressed and hungry,h they will roam through the land;i when they are famished, they will become enraged and, looking upward, will cursej their king and their God. Then they will look toward the earth and see only distress and darkness and fearful gloom,k and they will be thrust into utter darkness.l

*Nevertheless, there will be no more gloomm for those who were in distress. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,n but in the future he will honor Galilee of the nations, by the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan—

*The people walking in darknesso

have seen a great light;p

on those living in the land of deep darknessq

a light has dawned.r

You have enlarged the nations

and increased their joy;t

they rejoice before you

as people rejoice at the harvest,

as soldiers rejoice

when dividing the plunder.u

For as in the day of Midian’s defeat,v

you have shatteredw

the yokex that burdens them,

the bar across their shoulders,y

the rod of their oppressor.z

Every warrior’s boot used in battle

and every garment rolled in blood

will be destined for burning,a

will be fuel for the fire.

For to us a child is born,b

to us a son is given,c

and the governmentd will be on his shoulders.e

And he will be called

Wonderful Counselor,f Mighty God,g

Everlastingh Father,i Prince of Peace.j

Of the increase of his governmentk and peacel

there will be no end.m

He will reignn on David’s throne

and over his kingdom,

establishing and upholding it

with justiceo and righteousnessp

from that time on and forever.q

The zealr of the Lord Almighty

will accomplish this.

The Lord’s Anger Against Israel

The Lord has sent a messagea against Jacob;

it will fall on Israel.

All the people will know it—

Ephraimb and the inhabitants of Samariac—

who say with pride

and arroganced of heart,

“The bricks have fallen down,

but we will rebuild with dressed stone;e

the figf trees have been felled,

but we will replace them with cedars.g”

But the Lord has strengthened Rezin’sh foes against them

and has spurred their enemies on.

Arameansi from the east and Philistinesj from the west

have devouredk Israel with open mouth.

Yet for all this, his angerl is not turned away,

his hand is still upraised.m

But the people have not returnedn to him who strucko them,

nor have they soughtp the Lord Almighty.

So the Lord will cut off from Israel both head and tail,

both palm branch and reedq in a single day;r

the elderss and dignitariest are the head,

the prophetsu who teach liesv are the tail.

Those who guidew this people mislead them,

and those who are guided are led astray.x

Therefore the Lord will take no pleasure in the young men,y

nor will he pityz the fatherless and widows,

for everyone is ungodlya and wicked,b

every mouth speaks folly.c

Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away,

his hand is still upraised.d

Surely wickedness burns like a fire;e

it consumes briers and thorns,f

it sets the forest thickets ablaze,g

so that it rolls upward in a column of smoke.

By the wrathh of the Lord Almighty

the land will be scorchedi

and the people will be fuel for the fire;j

they will not spare each other.k

On the right they will devour,

but still be hungry;l

on the left they will eat,m

but not be satisfied.

They will all feed on the flesh of their own offspring:

Manasseh will feed on Ephraim, and Ephraim on Manasseh;n

together they will turn against Judah.o

Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away,

his hand is still upraised.p

Woeq to those who make unjust laws,

to those who issue oppressive decrees,r

to deprives the poor of their rights

and withhold justice from the oppressed of my people,t

making widows their prey

and robbing the fatherless.u

What will you do on the day of reckoning,v

when disasterw comes from afar?

To whom will you run for help?x

Where will you leave your riches?

Nothing will remain but to cringe among the captivesy

or fall among the slain.z

Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away,a

his hand is still upraised.

God’s Judgment on Assyria

“Woea to the Assyrian,b the rodc of my anger,

in whose hand is the clubd of my wrath!e

I send him against a godlessf nation,

I dispatchg him against a people who anger me,h

to seize loot and snatch plunder,i

and to tramplej them down like mud in the streets.

But this is not what he intends,k

this is not what he has in mind;

his purpose is to destroy,

to put an end to many nations.

‘Are not my commandersl all kings?’ he says.

‘Has not Kalnom fared like Carchemish?n

Is not Hamatho like Arpad,p

and Samariaq like Damascus?r

As my hand seized the kingdoms of the idols,s

kingdoms whose images excelled those of Jerusalem and Samaria—

shall I not deal with Jerusalem and her images

as I dealt with Samaria and her idols?t’ ”

When the Lord has finished all his worku against Mount Zionv and Jerusalem, he will say, “I will punish the king of Assyriaw for the willful pridex of his heart and the haughty looky in his eyes. For he says:

“ ‘By the strength of my handz I have done this,a

and by my wisdom, because I have understanding.

I removed the boundaries of nations,

I plundered their treasures;b

like a mighty one I subdued their kings.c

As one reaches into a nest,d

so my hand reached for the wealthe of the nations;

as people gather abandoned eggs,

so I gathered all the countries;f

not one flapped a wing,

or opened its mouth to chirp.g’ ”

Does the ax raise itself above the one who swings it,

or the saw boast against the one who uses it?h

As if a rod were to wield the person who lifts it up,

or a clubi brandish one who is not wood!

Therefore, the Lord, the Lord Almighty,

will send a wasting diseasej upon his sturdy warriors;k

under his pompl a firem will be kindled

like a blazing flame.

The Light of Israel will become a fire,n

their Holy Oneo a flame;

in a single day it will burn and consume

his thornsp and his briers.q

The splendor of his forestsr and fertile fields

it will completely destroy,s

as when sick people waste away.

And the remaining trees of his forestst will be so fewu

that a child could write them down.

The Remnant of Israel

In that daya the remnant of Israel,

the survivorsb of the house of Jacob,

will no longer relyc on him

who struck them downd

but will truly relye on the Lord,

the Holy One of Israel.f

A remnantg will return,h a remnant of Jacob

will return to the Mighty God.i

Though your people be like the sandj by the sea, Israel,

only a remnant will return.k

Destruction has been decreed,l

overwhelming and righteous.

The Lord, the Lord Almighty, will carry out

the destruction decreedm upon the whole land.n

Therefore, this is what the Lord, the Lord Almighty, says:

“My people who live in Zion,o

do not be afraidp of the Assyrians,

who beatq you with a rodr

and lift up a club against you, as Egypt did.

Very soons my anger against you will end

and my wratht will be directed to their destruction.u”

The Lord Almighty will lashv them with a whip,

as when he struck down Midianw at the rock of Oreb;

and he will raise his staffx over the waters,y

as he did in Egypt.

In that dayz their burdena will be lifted from your shoulders,

their yokeb from your neck;c

the yoked will be broken

because you have grown so fat.

They enter Aiath;

they pass through Migron;e

they store suppliesf at Mikmash.g

They go over the pass, and say,

“We will camp overnight at Geba.h”

Ramahi trembles;

Gibeahj of Saul flees.k

Cry out, Daughter Gallim!l

Listen, Laishah!

Poor Anathoth!m

Madmenah is in flight;

the people of Gebim take cover.

This day they will halt at Nob;n

they will shake their fisto

at the mount of Daughter Zion,p

at the hill of Jerusalem.

See, the Lord, the Lord Almighty,

…
