Chapter 10

Avoid Israel’s Mistakes

1For aI do not want you to be unaware, brethren, that our fathers were all bunder the cloud and all cpassed through the sea;

2and all were abaptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea;

3and all aate the same spiritual food;

4and all adrank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock which followed them; and the rock was 1Christ.

5Nevertheless, with most of them God was not well-pleased; for athey were laid low in the wilderness.

6Now these things happened as aexamples for us, so that we would not crave evil things as bthey also craved.

7Do not be aidolaters, as some of them were; as it is written, “bThe people sat down to eat and drink, and stood up to cplay.”

8Nor let us act immorally, as asome of them 1did, and btwenty-three thousand fell in one day.

9Nor let us try the Lord, as asome of them 1did, and were destroyed by the serpents.

10Nor agrumble, as some of them 1did, and bwere destroyed by the cdestroyer.

11Now these things happened to them as an aexample, and bthey were written for our instruction, upon whom cthe ends of the ages have come.

12Therefore let him who athinks he stands take heed that he does not fall.

13No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and aGod is faithful, who will not allow you to be btempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.

14Therefore, my abeloved, flee from bidolatry.

15I speak as to wise men; you judge what I say.

16Is not the acup of blessing which we bless a sharing in the blood of Christ? Is not the 1bbread which we break a sharing in the body of Christ?

17Since there is one 1bread, we awho are many are one body; for we all partake of the one bread.

18Look at 1the nation aIsrael; are not those who beat the sacrifices sharers in the altar?

19What do I mean then? That a thing sacrificed to idols is anything, or athat an idol is anything?

20No, but I say that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they asacrifice to demons and not to God; and I do not want you to become sharers in demons.

21aYou cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the table of the Lord and bthe table of demons.

22Or do we aprovoke the Lord to jealousy? We are not bstronger than He, are we?

23aAll things are lawful, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful, but not all things bedify.

24Let no one aseek his own good, but that of his 1neighbor.

25aEat anything that is sold in the meat market without asking questions for conscience’ sake;

26afor the earth is the Lord’s, and 1all it contains.

27If aone of the unbelievers invites you and you want to go, beat anything that is set before you without asking questions for conscience’ sake.

28But aif anyone says to you, “This is meat sacrificed to idols,” do not eat it, for the sake of the one who informed you, and for conscience’ sake;

29I mean not your own conscience, but the other man’s; for awhy is my freedom judged by another’s conscience?

30If I partake with thankfulness, awhy am I slandered concerning that for which I bgive thanks?

31Whether, then, you eat or drink or awhatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

32aGive no offense either to Jews or to Greeks or to bthe church of God;

33just as I also aplease all men in all things, bnot seeking my own profit but the profit of the many, cso that they may be saved.

Chapter 11

Christian Order

1aBe imitators of me, just as I also am of Christ.

2Now aI praise you because you bremember me in everything and chold firmly to the traditions, just as I delivered them to you.

3But I want you to understand that 1Christ is the ahead of every man, and bthe man is the head of a woman, and God is the chead of Christ.

4Every man who has something on his head while praying or aprophesying disgraces his head.

5But every awoman who has her head uncovered while praying or prophesying disgraces her head, for she is one and the same as the woman 1whose head is bshaved.

6For if a woman does not cover 1her head, let her also 2have her hair cut off; but if it is disgraceful for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, let her cover her head.

7For a man ought not to have his head covered, since he is the aimage and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man.

8For aman 1does not originate from woman, but woman from man;

9for indeed man was not created for the woman’s sake, but awoman for the man’s sake.

10Therefore the woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels.

11However, in the Lord, neither is woman 1independent of man, nor is man independent of woman.

12For as the woman 1originates from the man, so also the man has his birth through the woman; and aall things 2originate bfrom God.

13aJudge 1for yourselves: is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered?

14Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him,

15but if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her? For her hair is given to her for a covering.

16But if one is inclined to be contentious, awe have no 1other practice, nor have bthe churches of God.

17But in giving this instruction, aI do not praise you, because you come together not for the better but for the worse.

18For, in the first place, when you come together 1as a church, I hear that 2adivisions exist among you; and in part I believe it.

19For there amust also be factions among you, bso that those who are approved may become 1evident among you.

20Therefore when you meet together, it is not to eat the Lord’s Supper,

21for in your eating each one takes his own supper first; and one is hungry and aanother is drunk.

22What! Do you not have houses in which to eat and drink? Or do you despise the achurch of God and bshame those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall cI praise you? In this I will not praise you.

The Lord’s Supper

23For aI received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that bthe Lord Jesus in the night in which He was betrayed took bread;

24and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”

25In the same way He took athe cup also after supper, saying, “This cup is the bnew covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

26For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death auntil He comes.

27Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner, shall be aguilty of the body and the blood of the Lord.

28But a man must aexamine himself, and in so doing he is to eat of the bread and drink of the cup.

29For he who eats and drinks, eats and drinks judgment to himself if he does not judge the body rightly.

30For this reason many among you are weak and sick, and a number 1asleep.

31But if we judged ourselves rightly, we would not be judged.

32But when we are judged, we are adisciplined by the Lord so that we will not be condemned along with bthe world.

33So then, my brethren, when you come together to eat, wait for one another.

34If anyone is ahungry, let him eat bat home, so that you will not come together for judgment. The remaining matters I will carrange dwhen I come.
