CHAPTER 32

Elihu Answers in Anger

1Then these three men ceased answering Job because he was arighteous in his own eyes.

2But the anger of Elihu the son of Barachel the aBuzite, of the family of Ram, burned; against Job his anger burned bbecause he was proving himself righteous 1cbefore God.

3And his anger burned against his three friends because they had found no answer, and yet had condemned Job.

4Now Elihu had waited with his words for Job because they were years older than he.

5Then Elihu saw that there was no answer in the mouth of the three men, so his anger burned.

6So Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite answered and said,

“I am young in years and you are aold;

Therefore I was shy and afraid to tell you my knowledge.

7“I 1thought 2aage should speak,

And 3increased years should make wisdom known.

8“But it is a spirit in man,

And the abreath of the Almighty gives them bunderstanding.

9“The 1abundant in years may not be wise,

Nor may aelders understand justice.

10“So I 1say, ‘Listen to me,

I too will tell my knowledge.’

11“Behold, I waited for your words,

I gave ear to your reasonings,

While you searched out what to say.

12“I even carefully considered you;

And behold, there was no one who reproved Job,

Not one of you who answered his words.

13“Lest you say,

‘aWe have found wisdom;

God will drive him away, not man.’

14“Now he has not arranged his words against me,

Nor will I respond to him with your words.

15“They are dismayed; they no longer answer;

Words have moved away from them.

16“Shall I wait, because they do not speak,

Because they stand still and no longer answer?

17“I myself will also answer my share;

I also will tell my knowledge.

18“For I am full of words;

The spirit within my belly presses me.

19“Behold, my belly is like unvented wine, not opened;

Like new wineskins it is about to burst.

20“Let me speak that I may get relief;

Let me open my lips and answer.

21“Let me now abe partial to no one,

Nor flatter any man.

22“For I do not know how to flatter,

Else my Maker would soon carry me away.

CHAPTER 33

Elihu Asks Job to Hear and Respond

1“However now, Job, please ahear my speech,

And give ear to all my words.

2“Behold now, I open my mouth;

My tongue in my 1mouth speaks.

3“My words are from the uprightness of my heart,

And my lips speak aknowledge sincerely.

4“The aSpirit of God has made me,

And the bbreath of 1the Almighty gives me life.

5“aRespond to me if you can;

Arrange yourselves before me, take your stand.

6“Behold, I belong to God like you;

I too have been 1formed out of the aclay.

7“Behold, ano dread of me should terrify you,

Nor should my pressure weigh heavily on you.

8“Surely you have spoken in my hearing,

And I have heard the sound of your speech:

9‘I am apure, bwithout transgression;

I am innocent, and there cis no guilt in me.

10‘Behold, He finds reasons for opposition against me;

He acounts me as His enemy.

11‘He aputs my feet in the stocks;

He keeps watch over all my paths.’

12“Behold, let me answer you; ayou are not right in this,

For God is greater than mortal man.

13“Why do you acontend against Him?

For He does not give an answer for all His doings.

14“Indeed aGod speaks once,

Or twice, yet no one perceives it.

15“In a adream, a vision of the night,

When deep sleep falls on men,

While they slumber in their beds,

16Then aHe opens the ears of men,

And seals in their discipline,

17That He may turn man aside from his conduct,

And 1keep man from pride;

18He aholds back his soul from the pit,

And his life from passing over 1to death bby a weapon.

19“1Man is also reproved with apain on his bed,

And with unceasing contention in his bones,

20So that his life aloathes bread,

And his soul favorite food.

21“His aflesh wastes away from sight,

And his bbones which were not seen stick out.

22“Then ahis soul draws near to the pit,

And his life to those who bring death.

23“If there is an angel as amediator for him,

One out of a thousand,

To declare to a man what is 1right for him,

24Then let him be gracious to him, and say,

‘Deliver him from agoing down to the pit;

I have found batonement’;

25Let his flesh become fresher than in youth,

Let him return to the days of his youthful vigor;

26Then he will aentreat God, and He will accept him,

And bhe will see His face with joyful shouts,

And He may restore His righteousness to man.

27“He will sing to men and say,

‘I ahave sinned and perverted what is right,

But He has not done bwhat is due to me.

28‘He has redeemed my soul from passing into the pit,

And my life shall asee the light.’

29“Behold, God does aall these things twice, three times with men,

30To abring back his soul from the pit,

That he may be enlightened with the light of life.

31“Pay attention, O Job, listen to me;

Keep silent, and I will speak.

32“Then if 1you have any speech, respond to me;

Speak, for I desire to prove you righteous.

33“If not, alisten to me;

Keep silent, and I will teach you wisdom.”

CHAPTER 34

Elihu Answers That God Will Be Just

1Then Elihu answered and said,

2“Hear my speech, you wise men,

And give ear to me, you who know.

3“For athe ear tests words

As the palate tastes food.

4“Let us choose for ourselves what is just;

Let us know among ourselves what is good.

5“For Job has said, ‘aI am righteous,

But bGod has removed my justice;

61Should I lie concerning my justice?

My 2awound is incurable, though I am without transgression.’

7“What man is like Job,

Who adrinks up mocking like water,

8But he travels ain company with the workers of iniquity,

And walks with wicked men?

9“For he has said, ‘aIt is of no use to a man

When he 1is pleased with God.’

10“Therefore, listen to me, you men with a heart of wisdom.

Far be it from God to ado injustice,

And from the Almighty to do wrong.

11“For He pays a man according to ahis work,

And makes 1him find it according to his way.

12“Truly, aGod will not act wickedly,

And the Almighty will not pervert justice.

13“Who aappointed Him with authority over the earth?

And who bhas laid on Him the whole world?

14“If He should set His heart on it,

If He should agather to Himself His spirit and His breath,

15All aflesh would breathe its last together,

And man would breturn to dust.

16“But if you have understanding, hear this;

Give ear to the sound of my speech.

17“Shall aone who hates justice 1rule?

And bwill you condemn the righteous mighty One,

18Who says to a king, ‘Vile one,’

To nobles, ‘Wicked ones’;

19Who shows no apartiality to princes

Nor recognizes the rich above the poor,

For they all are the bwork of His hands?

20“In a moment they die, and aat midnight

People are shaken and pass away,

And bthe mighty are taken away without a hand.

21“For aHis eyes are upon the ways of a man,

And He sees all his steps.

22“There is ano darkness or shadow of death

Where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves.

23“1For He does not aneed to consider a man further,

That he should go before God in judgment.

24“He breaks in pieces amighty men without searching anything out,

And sets others in their place.

25“Therefore He arecognizes their labors,

And bHe overthrows them in the night,

And they are crushed.

26“He astrikes them like the wicked

1In a public place,

27Because they aturned aside from following Him,

And bhad no insight from any of His ways;

28So that they caused athe cry of the poor to come to Him,

And that He might bhear the cry of the afflicted.

29So if He keeps quiet, who then can condemn?

So if He hides His face, who then can perceive Him?

He is above both nation and man altogether,

30So that agodless men would not rule

Nor be snares of the people.

31“For has anyone said to God,

‘I have borne chastisement;

I will not work destructively anymore;

32Instruct me what I do not behold;

If I have adone injustice,

I will not do it again’?

33“Shall He arepay on your terms, because you have rejected it?

For you must choose, and not I;

Therefore say what you know.

34“Men with a heart of wisdom will say to me,

And a wise man who hears me,

35‘Job aspeaks without knowledge,

And his words are without insight.

36‘Job ought to be tested 1to the limit

Because he answers alike wicked men.

37‘For he adds atransgression to his sin;

He bstrikes his hands together among us,

And multiplies his words against God.’”

CHAPTER 35

Elihu Answers Job

1Then Elihu answered and said,

2“Do you think this is according to ajustice?

Do you say, ‘My righteousness is more than God’s’?

3“For you say, ‘aWhat use will it be to 1You?

bWhat profit will I have, more than if I had sinned?’

4“I will respond to you,

And your friends with you.

5“aLook at the heavens and see;

And perceive bthe clouds—they are higher than you.

6“If you have sinned, awhat do you accomplish against Him?

And if your transgressions are many, what do you do to Him?

7“If you are righteous, awhat do you give to Him,

Or what does He receive from your hand?

8“Your wickedness is for a man like yourself,

And your righteousness is for a son of man.

9“Because of amany oppressions they cry out;

They cry for help because of the arm bof many oppressors.

10“But ano one says, ‘Where is God my Maker,

Who bgives songs of praise in the night,

11Who ateaches us more than the beasts of the earth

And makes us wiser than the birds of the heavens?’

12“There athey cry out, but He does not answer

Because of the pride of evil men.

13“Surely aGod will not listen to 1an empty cry,

Nor will the Almighty perceive it.

14“How much less when ayou say you do not perceive Him,

The bcase is before Him, and you must wait for Him!

15“And now, because He has not visited in His anger,

Nor has He acknowledged 1transgression well,

16So Job opens his mouth vainly;

He multiplies words awithout knowledge.”

CHAPTER 36

Elihu Says God Gives the Afflicted Justice

1Then Elihu continued and said,

2“Wait for me a little, and I will show you

That there 1is yet more to be said in God’s behalf.

3“I will take up my knowledge from afar,

And I will ascribe arighteousness to my Maker.

4“For truly amy words are not a lie;

One who is 1bperfect in knowledge is with you.

5“Behold, God…
