Amos 1–3

1^*The words of Amos, ^awho was among the herdmen of ^bTekoa, which he saw concerning Israel ^cin the days of ^dUzziah king of Judah, and in the days of ^e*Jeroboam the son of Joash king of Israel, two years before ^fthe earthquake. ²And he said,

^gThe Lord will roar from Zion,

^gAnd utter his voice from Jerusalem;

And ^hthe habitations of the shepherds shall mourn,

And ⁱthe top of ^jkCarmel shall wither.

³Thus saith the Lord;

^lFor three transgressions of ^mDamascus,

^l||And for four, I will not ^||turn away the punishment thereof;

^oBecause they have threshed ^jpGilead with ^qthreshing instruments of iron:

^4rBut I will send a fire into the house of ^sHazael,

^rWhich shall devour the palaces of ^sBen-hadad.

⁵I will break also ^tthe bar of ^mDamascus,

And cut off the inhabitant from ^||uthe plain of ^uuAven,

And ^vhim that holdeth the sceptre from ^||the house of ^wEden:

And ^†xthe people of Syria shall go into captivity ^xunto ^yKir, saith the Lord.

⁶Thus saith the Lord;

^lFor three transgressions of ^zaGaza,

^lAnd for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof;

^bBecause they ^||carried away captive the whole captivity,

^cTo deliver them up ^dto Edom:

^7eBut I will send a fire on the wall of Gaza,

^eWhich shall devour the palaces thereof:

⁸And I will cut off the inhabitant from ^afAshdod,

And ^ghim that holdeth the sceptre from ^ahAshkelon,

And I will ⁱturn mine hand against ^akEkron:

And ^blthe remnant of the Philistines shall perish, saith the Lord God.

⁹Thus saith the Lord;

^mFor three transgressions of ⁿTyrus,

^mAnd for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof;

^oBecause they delivered up the whole captivity ^dto Edom,

And remembered not ^†pthe brotherly covenant:

^10eBut I will send a fire on the wall of Tyrus,

^eWhich shall devour the palaces thereof.

¹¹Thus saith the Lord;

^mFor three transgressions of ^qrEdom,

^mAnd for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof;

^qBecause he did pursue ^shis brother ^twith the sword,

And ^†did cast off all pity,

And ^this anger did tear perpetually,

And he kept his wrath for ever:

^12eBut I will send a fire upon ^vTeman,

^eWhich shall devour the palaces of ^wBozrah.

¹³Thus saith the Lord;

^mFor three transgressions of the children of ^rxAmmon,

^mAnd for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof;

Because ^ythey have ^||ripped up the women with child of Gilead,

^xThat they might enlarge their border:

^14eBut ^zI will kindle a fire in the wall of ^aRabbah,

^eAnd it shall devour the palaces thereof,

^bWith shouting in the day of battle,

With a tempest in the day of the whirlwind:

¹⁵And ^ctheir king shall go into captivity,

^cHe and his princes together, saith the Lord.

2Thus saith the Lord;

^aFor three transgressions of ^bMoab,

^aAnd for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof;

^cBecause he burned the bones of the king of Edom into lime:

^2dBut I will send a fire upon Moab,

^dAnd it shall devour the palaces of ^eKerioth:

And Moab shall die with ^ftumult,

^gWith shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet:

³And I will cut off ^hthe judge from the midst thereof,

And will slay all the princes thereof with him, saith the Lord.

⁴Thus saith the Lord;

^aFor three transgressions of Judah,

^aAnd for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof;

ⁱBecause they have despised the law of the Lord,

And ⁱhave not kept his commandments,

And ^ktheir lies caused them to err,

^lAfter the which their fathers have walked:

^5dBut ^mI will send a fire upon Judah,

^dAnd ^mit shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem.

⁶Thus saith the Lord;

^aFor three transgressions of Israel,

^aAnd for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof;

Because ⁿthey sold the righteous ^ofor silver,

^oAnd the poor for a pair of shoes;

^7pThat pant after ^qthe dust of the earth on the head of the poor,

And ^rturn aside the way of the meek:

And ^sa man and his father will go in unto the same ^||maid,

^tTo profane my holy name:

⁸And they lay themselves down upon ^uclothes laid to pledge ^vby every altar,

And they drink the wine of ^||wthe condemned ^vin the house of their god.

⁹Yet ^xdestroyed I the Amorite before them,

^yWhose height was like the height of the cedars,

And he was strong as ^yythe oaks;

Yet ^zI destroyed his fruit from above,

And ^zhis roots from beneath.

¹⁰Also ^aI brought you up from the land of Egypt,

And ^bled you forty years through the wilderness,

^cTo possess the land of the Amorite.

¹¹And I raised up of your sons for prophets,

And of your young men for ^dNazarites.

Is it not even thus, O ye children of Israel? saith the Lord.

¹²But ^eye gave the Nazarites wine to drink;

And commanded the prophets, ^fsaying, Prophesy not.

¹³Behold, ^||hI am pressed under you,

As a cart is pressed that is full of sheaves.

¹⁴Therefore ⁱthe flight shall perish from ^jkthe swift,

And ^jlthe strong shall not strengthen his force,

^mNeither shall the mighty deliver ^†himself:

¹⁵Neither shall he stand that handleth the bow;

And he that is ^knswift of foot shall not deliver himself:

^joNeither shall he that rideth the horse deliver himself.

¹⁶And he that is ^†courageous among ^pthe mighty

Shall flee away naked in that day, saith the Lord.

3^aHear this word that the Lord hath spoken against you, ^bO children of Israel,

Against the whole family ^cwhich I brought up from the land of Egypt, saying,

^2dYou only ^ehave I known of all the families of the earth:

^fTherefore I will ^†punish you for all your iniquities.

^3gCan two walk together, except they be agreed?

^4hWill ⁱa lion roar in the forest, when he hath no prey?

ⁱWill a young lion ^†cry out of his ^kden, if he have taken nothing?

^5lCan a bird fall in a snare upon the earth, where no gin is for him?

^lShall one take up a snare from the earth, and have taken nothing at all?

^6eeShall a trumpet be blown in the city, and the people ^||not be afraid?

^ffShall there be ^ggevil in a city, ^||and ^ffthe Lord hath not done it?

⁷Surely the Lord God will do nothing,

^hhBut he revealeth ^jhis secret unto his servants the prophets.

⁸ⁱThe lion hath roared, who will not fear?

The Lord God hath spoken, ^kkwho can but prophesy?

⁹Publish in the palaces at ^llAshdod,

And in the palaces in the land of Egypt,

And say, Assemble yourselves upon the mountains of ^mSamaria,

And behold the great tumults in the midst thereof,

And the ^||noppressed in the midst thereof.

¹⁰For ^othey know not to do right, saith the Lord,

Who store up ^ooviolence and ^||robbery in their palaces.

¹¹Therefore thus saith the Lord God;

^pAn adversary there shall be even round about the land;

And he shall bring down thy strength from thee,

And ^pthy palaces shall be spoiled.

¹²Thus saith the Lord;

As the shepherd ^†taketh out of the mouth of the lion ^qtwo legs, or ^qa piece of an ear;

So shall the children of Israel be taken out

That dwell in ^mSamaria ^rin the corner of a bed, and ^||rrin Damascus in a couch.

^13aHear ye, and testify ^sin the house of Jacob,

Saith the Lord God, ^ssthe God of hosts,

¹⁴That in the day that I shall ^||visit the transgressions of Israel upon him

I will also ^||visit ^tthe altars of ^uBeth-el:

And ^vthe horns of the altar shall be cut off,

And ^vfall to the ground.

¹⁵And I ^wwill smite ^xthe winter house with ^ythe summer house;

And ^zthe houses of ivory shall perish,

And the great houses shall have an end, saith the Lord.
