The Table of Nations

This is the accounta of Shem, Ham and Japheth,b Noah’s sons,c who themselves had sons after the flood.

The Japhethites

10:2-5pp — 1Ch 1:5–7

The sons of Japheth:

Gomer,d Magog,e Madai, Javan,f Tubal,g Meshekh and Tiras.

The sons of Gomer:

Ashkenaz,i Riphath and Togarmah.j

The sons of Javan:

Elishah,k Tarshish,l the Kittitesm and the Rodanites. (From these the maritime peoples spread out into their territories by their clans within their nations, each with its own language.)n

The Hamites

10:6-20pp — 1Ch 1:8–16

The sons of Ham:

Cush,o Egypt, Putp and Canaan.q

The sons of Cush:

Seba,r Havilah,s Sabtah, Raamaht and Sabteka.

The sons of Raamah:

Shebau and Dedan.v

Cush was the father of Nimrod,w who became a mighty warrior on the earth. He was a mightyx huntery before the Lord; that is why it is said, “Like Nimrod, a mighty hunter before the Lord.” The first centers of his kingdom were Babylon,z Uruk,a Akkad and Kalneh,b in Shinar.c From that land he went to Assyria,d where he built Nineveh,e Rehoboth Ir, Calah and Resen, which is between Nineveh and Calah—which is the great city.

Egypt was the father of

the Ludites, Anamites, Lehabites, Naphtuhites, Pathrusites, Kasluhites (from whom the Philistinesf came) and Caphtorites.g

Canaanh was the father of

Sidoni his firstborn,j and of the Hittites,k Jebusites,l Amorites,m Girgashites,n Hivites,o Arkites, Sinites, Arvadites,p Zemarites and Hamathites.q

Later the Canaaniter clans scattered and the borders of Canaans reached from Sidont toward Geraru as far as Gaza,v and then toward Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboyim,w as far as Lasha.

These are the sons of Ham by their clans and languages, in their territories and nations.

The Semites

10:21-31pp — Ge 11:10–27; 1Ch 1:17–27

Sons were also born to Shem, whose older brother was Japheth; Shem was the ancestor of all the sons of Eber.x

The sons of Shem:

Elam,y Ashur,z Arphaxad,a Lud and Aram.b

The sons of Aram:

Uz,c Hul, Gether and Meshek.

Arphaxad was the father of Shelah,

and Shelah the father of Eber.d

Two sons were born to Eber:

One was named Peleg, because in his time the earth was divided; his brother was named Joktan.

Joktan was the father of

Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah, Hadoram, Uzal,e Diklah, Obal, Abimael, Sheba,f Ophir,g Havilah and Jobab. All these were sons of Joktan.

The region where they lived stretched from Mesha toward Sephar, in the eastern hill country.

These are the sons of Shem by their clans and languages, in their territories and nations.

These are the clans of Noah’s sons,h according to their lines of descent, within their nations. From these the nations spread out over the earthi after the flood.

The Tower of Babel

Now the whole world had one languagea and a common speech. As people moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinarb and settled there.

They said to each other, “Come, let’s make bricksc and bake them thoroughly.” They used brick instead of stone,d and tare for mortar. Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens,f so that we may make a nameg for ourselves and not be scatteredh over the face of the whole earth.”i

But the Lord came downj to see the city and the tower that they were building. The Lord said, “If as one people speaking the same languagek they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. Come, let usl go downm and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.”n

So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth,o and they stopped building the city. That is why it was called Babelp—because there the Lord confused the languageq of the whole world.r From there the Lord scattereds them over the face of the whole earth.

From Shem to Abram

11:10-27pp — Ge 10:21–31; 1Ch 1:17–27

This is the accounta of Shem’s family line.

Two years after the flood, when Shem was 100 years old, he became the father of Arphaxad.b And after he became the father of Arphaxad, Shem lived 500 years and had other sons and daughters.

When Arphaxad had lived 35 years, he became the father of Shelah.c And after he became the father of Shelah, Arphaxad lived 403 years and had other sons and daughters.

When Shelah had lived 30 years, he became the father of Eber.d And after he became the father of Eber, Shelah lived 403 years and had other sons and daughters.

When Eber had lived 34 years, he became the father of Peleg.e And after he became the father of Peleg, Eber lived 430 years and had other sons and daughters.

When Peleg had lived 30 years, he became the father of Reu.f And after he became the father of Reu, Peleg lived 209 years and had other sons and daughters.

When Reu had lived 32 years, he became the father of Serug.g And after he became the father of Serug, Reu lived 207 years and had other sons and daughters.

When Serug had lived 30 years, he became the father of Nahor.h And after he became the father of Nahor, Serug lived 200 years and had other sons and daughters.

When Nahor had lived 29 years, he became the father of Terah.i And after he became the father of Terah, Nahor lived 119 years and had other sons and daughters.

After Terah had lived 70 years, he became the father of Abram,j Nahork and Haran.l

Abram’s Family

This is the accounta of Terah’s family line.

Terah became the father of Abram, Nahorb and Haran. And Haran became the father of Lot.c While his father Terah was still alive, Haran died in Ur of the Chaldeans,d in the land of his birth. Abram and Nahore both married. The name of Abram’s wife was Sarai,f and the name of Nahor’s wife was Milkah;g she was the daughter of Haran, the father of both Milkah and Iskah. Now Sarai was childless because she was not able to conceive.h

Terah took his son Abram, his grandson Loti son of Haran, and his daughter-in-lawj Sarai, the wife of his son Abram, and together they set out from Ur of the Chaldeansk to go to Canaan.l But when they came to Harran,m they settled there.

Terahn lived 205 years, and he died in Harran.
