Jonah’s Disobedience

1 Now the word of the Lord came to aJonah the son of Amittai, saying, “Arise, go to bNineveh, that cgreat city, and cry out against it; for dtheir wickedness has come up before Me.” But Jonah arose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. He went down to eJoppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid the fare, and went down into it, to go with them to fTarshish gfrom the presence of the Lord.

Jonah 1:1–3 — The New International Version (NIV)

The word of the Lord came to Jonah son of Amittai: “Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me.”

But Jonah ran away from the Lord and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the Lord.

But Jonah got up and went in the opposite direction to get away from the Lord. He went down to the port of Joppa, where he found a ship leaving for Tarshish. He bought a ticket and went on board, hoping to escape from the Lord by sailing to Tarshish.
