Zephaniah, Son of Maaseiah (צְפַנְיָה, tsephanyah; צְפַנְיָהוּ, tsephanyahu; “Yahweh has hidden or treasured”). One of 74 men executed by Nebuchadnezzar in Riblah, after Jerusalem was conquered in 587/6 bc (Jer 52:24–28; 2 Kgs 25:18–21). He was the second priest to Seraiah, the chief priest of the temple. Zephaniah was a member of two delegations sent by King Zedekiah to seek Jeremiah’s intercession with the Lord on behalf of the nation (Jer 21:1–7; 37:3–10). He may have been a cousin to Jeremiah (Jer 32:7; 35:4). Shemaiah the Nehelamite, an exiled priest, rebuked Zephaniah in a letter for failing to rebuke Jeremiah. Zephaniah, a loyal priest, read the letter to Jeremiah. As a result, Shemaiah was judged for his false prophecies against Yahweh (Jer 29:24–32).
