Shemaiah the Priest (שְׁמַעְיָה, shema'yah). A priest who returned to Judah from exile with Zerubbabel (Neh 12:6). The leader of the family of Shemaiah signed the written agreement to keep the law during the time of Ezra and Nehemiah (Neh 10:8). Jehonathan was the leader of the family in the postexilic period when Joiakim, the son of Jeshua, was the high priest (Neh 12:18). He may also be the Shemaiah mentioned as an ancestor of Zechariah in Neh 12:35.
