Mahalath, Daughter of Ishmael (מָחֲלַת, machalath). A wife of Esau (Gen 28:9). Esau marries Mahalath after learning that his parents are displeased with his Canaanite wives (Gen 28:8–9). Mahalath is Esau’s first cousin, the daughter of his uncle Ishmael and the sister of his cousin Nebaioth. In Genesis 36:3, one of Esau’s wives is also identified as the daughter of Ishmael and the sister of Nebaioth, but she is called Basemath. Another of Esau’s wives, a Hittite mentioned in Gen 26:34, was also called Basemath. For further discussion of the issues related to identifying Esau’s wives, see the article on Judith, Daughter of Beeri.
