Basemath, Daughter of Ishmael (בָּשְׂמַת, bosmath). A wife of Esau (Gen 36:3–4, 10, 13, 17). When Esau realized his Canaanite wives displeased his parents, he married his cousin, the daughter of his uncle Ishmael (Gen 28:9). In that passage, the woman is called Mahalath and is also identified as the daughter of Ishmael and the sister of Nebaioth (compare Gen 28:9; 36:3). The Basemath named in Gen 36 may be the same woman identified as Mahalath in Gen 28:9. For further discussion of the issues related to identifying Esau’s wives, see the article on Judith, Daughter of Beeri.
