Basemath, Daughter of Elon (בָּשְׂמַת, bosmath). A wife of Esau (Gen 26:34). Basemath is identified as a Hittite (meaning a Canaanite; see Deut 7:1) who, along with Judith, made Rebekah’s life miserable (Gen 26:35; 27:46). Basemath may be the same “daughter of Elon” called Adah in Gen 36:2, 4, 10, 16. Another wife of Esau is called “Basemath” in Gen 36:3, but this woman is identified as the daughter of Ishmael and the sister of Nebaioth. For further discussion of the issues related to identifying Esau’s wives, see the article on Judith, Daughter of Beeri.
