Hazazon-Tamar (חַצְצֹ, chatstsoוֹן, n-תָּמָר, tamar). A wilderness town taken from the Amorites (Gen 14:7) and assigned to the tribe of Judah (Josh 15:62). Ezekiel also traces the southern border of Israel by reference to “Tamar” (Ezek 47:19; 48:28). The best location for Hazazon-Tamar is likely south of the Dead Sea. Hazazon-Tamar is often identified with En-Gedi because of the qualification in 2 Chr 20:2: “Hazazon-Tamar (that is, En-gedi).” It is possible that the two are not connected geographically, but by association since תָּמָר (tamar) is the date palm, groves of which grow near En-Gedi.
