Ezekiel, Book Of (יְחֶזְקֵל, yechezqel). The book of Ezekiel appears in the Hebrew canon among the Latter Prophets immediately after Jeremiah and before Hosea. In the Septuagint and Protestant canons, Ezekiel follows the book of Lamentations. This 48-chapter book, set within the sixth century bc exile in ancient Babylon, records a series of visions, sign acts, and oracles of the exiled priest and prophet, Ezekiel the son of Buzi (Ezek 1:3). His words tell of Jerusalem’s impending destruction and offer both warnings and hope to those already exiled in Babylon. According to internal indicators and extrabiblical texts, most of the oracles and visions in the book of Ezekiel are from 593–571 bc.
