Adah, Daughter of Elon (עָדָה, adah). A wife of Esau and mother of Eliphaz (Gen 36:2, 4, 10, 16). Adah is identified as a “Hittite,” referring to a native Canaanite people descended from Heth, son of Canaan (Deut 7:1; 1 Chr 1:13). Isaac and Rebekah, daughter of Bethuel, disliked the fact that Esau had married local women (Gen 26:35). That two of Esau’s wives were native Canaanites is evident from Gen 27:46, where Rebekah calls them “daughters of the land.” Adah may be the same “daughter of Elon” called Basemath in Gen 26:34. For further discussion of the issues related to identifying Esau’s wives, see the article on Judith, Daughter of Beeri.
