Nehemiah, Governor of Judah, Son of Hacaliah (נְחֶמְיָה, nechemyah). Governor of Judah in 20–32 year of Artaxerxes (465–424 bc). Nehemiah convinced King Artaxerxes of Persia to let him return to Jerusalem to help his people “who had survived the exile … [and were] in great trouble and shame”—this is recorded a first person narrative (Neh 1:1–3; 2:1–8 ESV). He returned to Jerusalem to rebuild its walls and institute religious reforms. Identified as the son of Hacaliah (Neh 1:1; 10:2).
