Shechem, City Of (שְׁכֶם, shekhem; “shoulder”). Also known as Tell Balâṭah; located 40 miles north of Jerusalem in the fertile valley between Mount Ebal and Mount Gerizim, just east of modern-day Nablus. The city’s location along the Shechem pass allowed it to control commercial and military traffic throughout the region. This territory was occupied by the tribes of Manasseh and Ephraim.
Shechem is the first place where Abram stops after entering Canaan (Gen 12:6). It is the location of the rape of Dinah (Gen 34), the covenant renewal (Josh 24), and the burial of Joseph (Josh 24:32). Shechem also is the place from which Abimelech reigns (Judg 9), and it is the site of Rehoboam’s coronation (1 Kgs 12:1). Shechem is refortified by Jeroboam, who then lives there (1 Kgs 12:25).
