Dinah, Daughter of Jacob (דִּינָה, dinah). The seventh child of Leah and Jacob (Gen 30:21; 34:1). Jacob’s daughter, who leaves her father’s house to mingle with the women of the Canaanite city where Jacob and his family temporarily settle on their way to Bethel (Gen 34:1–31; see also Gen 12:6). While there, Dinah is “taken” (often translated “raped”) by Shechem, the prince of the city (Gen 34:1–31). Dinah’s brothers, Simeon and Levi, see this as a defilement their sister and execute revenge on Shechem and his clan.
