Sergius Paulus (Σέργιος Παῦλος, Sergios Paulos). The Roman proconsul of Cyprus who becomes a Christian because of Paul and Barnabas’ teaching (Acts 13:4–12). Sergius summons Paul and Barnabas to teach him when they arrive at Paphos (Acts 13:7). A false prophet, Bar-Jesus, opposes Paul and Barnabas, but Sergius Paulus is converted when Paul strikes the false prophet blind by the power of the Holy Spirit (Acts 13:9–11).
It is difficult to identify this Sergius Paulus with any extrabiblical figure having the same name. Two (or possibly three) proconsuls with this name are known from inscriptions, but none can be conclusively connected to the governor in Acts 13.
