Ptolemaic Empire Refers to the period in Egyptian history, from ca. 323–30 bc, when Egypt was ruled by a Greek-speaking dynasty founded by Ptolemy, one of the generals of Alexander the Great. The Ptolemaic empire ended in 30 bc when Octavian annexed Egypt after defeating Mark Antony and Cleopatra. The Ptolemies controlled Syria-Palestine until around 200 bc when they were defeated by the Seleucids at the Battle of Panium.
