Proconsul An officer who exercised purely civil functions in the proconsular provinces. When Augustus divided the Roman provinces into senatorial and imperial (27 bc), he assigned to the senate the territories that were peaceable and could be held without force of arms. In senatorial provinces, a proconsul was appointed by lot every year by the senators. Examples of proconsuls in the Bible include Gallio and Sergius Paulus (Acts 18:12, 13:7).
