Micah the Prophet (מִיכָה, mikhah). A prophet from Moresheth whose words are recorded in the book of Micah (Jer 26:18, Mic 1:1). Nothing is known of the prophet Micah apart from what is stated in the heading of the book (Micah 1:1) and in Jeremiah (26:18). Instead of giving his name and the name of his father, both references refer to Micah as “the Morashtite,” presumably indicating he was a native of Moresheth which is likely the Moresheth-Gath mentioned in Micah 1:14 (Mason, Micah, Nahum, and Obadiah, 23). Moresheth-Gath was likely about 25 miles southwest of Jerusalem, between the central hill country of Judah and the coastal plain controlled by the Philistines. Jeremiah indicates that Micah prophesied during the reign of Hezekiah. The superscription to the book of Micah also places him in the earlier reigns of Ahaz and Jotham, making him a contemporary of Isaiah (compare Isa 1:1).
