Maccabees, Second Book of The A work detailing some of the same events as (1 Maccabees 1:10–7:50), but from a different perspective. Its history covers the Hellenistic reform, the Maccabean revolt, up to the defeat of the Seleucid general, Nicanor. Originally written in Greek and as an abridgment of a five-volume work of Jason of Cyrene (2 Maccabees 2:19–32), which itself is now lost, 2 Maccabees seeks to encourage the reader via the exemplary Jewish heroes throughout the narrative.
