Jericho (יְרִחוֹ, yericho). An ancient city located approximately 10 miles northwest of the Dead Sea in Cisjordan. The city guarded one of the primary roads from the Jordan Rift valley up to the spine of the central hill country.

The most ancient site affiliated with Jericho is located at Tell es-Sultan. A second site associated with Hellenistic and Roman occupations has been well documented at Tulal Abu el-’Alayiq. Each of these was known as Jericho in their respective periods of settlement. The site contained a spring, ‘Ain es-Sultan, and a resultant oasis (thus, the biblical designation, “city of the palm trees,” Judg 3:13), which contributed to its long periods of occupation.
