Ish-Bosheth, Son of Saul (אִישׁ־בֹּשֶׁת, ish-bosheth). Also called Eshbaal. The youngest of the four sons of King Saul and Ahinoam, and a full brother of Jonathan. Following the deaths of his father and brothers in battle, he becomes Israel’s second king and reigns for two years before he is assassinated. Ish-Bosheth, used in 2 Samuel, means “man of shame”; “Eshbaal,” used in 1 Chronicles, means “man of Baal” or “Baal exists.”
