Bigvai the Exile (בִּגְוַי, bigway). A leader of the exiles who returned to Judah with Zerubbabel (Ezra 2:2; Neh 7:7). Bigvai is also named as the head of a group of over 2000 people who returned from exile (Ezra 2:14; Neh 7:19). Bigvai is the only leader mentioned in Ezra 2:2 and Neh 7:7 whose name also appears in Ezra and Nehemiah as the name of a postexilic clan (Ezra 2:14; 8:14; Neh 7:19; 10:17). It is uncertain whether the leader named in Ezra 2:2 is also the eponymous ancestor of the clan. Ezra 8:14 mentions that 70 men of the clan of Bigvai, led by Uthai and Zaccur, returned from exile with Ezra. A later leader of the family was also one of the men who signed the written agreement to keep the law during the time of Ezra and Nehemiah (Neh 10:16; see Bigvai the Witness).
