Bacchides (βακχίδης, bakchidēs). A governor and a friend of both Antiochus Epiphanes (175–164 bc) and Demetrius Soter (162–150 bc) (1 Macc 7:8). Bacchides conquered Judaea at the request of Demetrius. He did so on behalf of the high priest Alcimus, who had reported to Demetrius that Judas Maccabeus was stirring up trouble in Judea (2 Macc 14:3–7). Bacchides went to Judaea a second time after Judas Maccabeus killed the Syrian general Nicanor near Adasa (1 Macc 9:1). He defeated Judas, who fell in battle (1 Macc 9:18). After Alcimus died, Bacchides returned to Demetrius (1 Macc 9:56–7). The pro-Syrian Jews later convinced Bacchides to return to Judaea, but he was unsuccessful. He then made peace with Jonathan Maccabeus (1 Macc 9:68–72).
