Assos (Ἆσσος, Assos). An ancient city on the east coast of the Aegean Sea in the Roman province of Mysia in Anatolia. Mentioned in Acts 20:13–14 in the context of Paul’s third missionary journey.
Biblical Relevance
Assos appears in Paul’s voyage from Alexandria to Troas to Miletus (Acts 20:13–16) during his third missionary journey (Acts 18:23–21:16). The biblical narrative indicates that Paul’s companions traveled from Troas to Assos by boat, while he preferred to go to Assos by land (Acts 20:13), a distance of approximately 20 miles. Reunited in Assos, likely at the city’s seaport, Paul and his associates sailed to Miletus (Acts 20:14–15).
