Aegean Sea An extension of the Mediterranean Sea between Greece and Turkey. The sea is 200 miles wide and 400 miles long, bordered on the southern end by the island of Crete and leading to the Black Sea on the north by way of the Strait of Dardanelles. Hundreds of islands lie in the sea (e.g., Lesbos and Patmos; see Rev 1:9), making it ideal for short voyages by boat. Paul traveled by way of the Aegean Sea on his missionary journeys (Acts 17:14).
