Antiochus V Eupator (Eὐπάτωρ, Eypatōr). Son and successor to Antiochus IV Epiphanes. He was nine years old when he became king of the Seleucid Empire (based in Syria) in 164 bc (Appian, Syriaca 46). Antiochus V Eupator defeated Judas Maccabeus, who had besieged Jerusalem (1 Maccabees 6:18–30, 42; Josephus, Antiquities, 12.9.4). Eupator besieged Jerusalem himself until peace was concluded on the condition that the Jews would not have to change any of their national customs (1 Maccabees 6:55–60; Antiquities, 12.9.7).
