Syria (Σύρια, Syria). A geographical region loosely corresponding to modern-day Syria.

Syria was once thought of as relatively unimportant in matters of ancient Near Eastern history and culture. Lacking political unity for most of its history, Syria was considered derivative in every sense—adopting and adapting its culture from its more powerful neighbors: the Mesopotamians and the Hittites.

However, it now appears that Syria played a major role in the earliest domestication of plants and animals, as well as in the formation of urban settlements. Mesopotamia appears to be influenced by Syria in many ways, and the Hittites were also affected by their Syrian conquests.
