117:1–2 This brief praise psalm makes a distinctive statement by echoing the great theme of Yahweh’s steadfast love toward Israel, orienting it toward the foreign nations and calling them to praise Yahweh (compare Isa 2:1–4). This psalm is included in the collection of psalms known as the Egyptian Hallel psalms (see note on Psa 113:1–9). |
117:1 you nations The Hebrew word used here, goy, refers to geographic territories or people groups outside of Israel.
you peoples The Hebrew word ummah is used here, which refers to ethnic groups other than Israel (although it is not used very often). See note on 108:3.
117:2 The Hebrew words used in this verse, chesed (which may be rendered “steadfast love” or “graciousness”), and emeth (which may be rendered as “trustworthiness,” “constancy,” or even “faithfulness”) are often paired together to describe Yahweh as absolutely dependable to fulfill His promises. |
