Footnotes

  1. 5 Grk “every man”; but ἄνθρωπος (anthrōpos) is used in a generic sense here to stress humanity rather than masculinity.
  2. 6 Grk “Let God be true, and every man a liar.” The words “proven” and “shown up” are supplied in the translation to clarify the meaning.
  3. 7 Grk “might be justified,” a subjunctive verb, but in this type of clause it carries the same sense as the future indicative verb in the latter part. “Will” is more idiomatic in contemporary English.
  4. 8 Or “prevail when you judge.” A quotation from Ps 51:4.

ESVEnglish Standard Version

By no means! Let God be true though every one were a liar, as it is written,

“That you may be justified in your words,

and prevail when you are judged.”

NIVNew International Version (2011)

Not at all! Let God be true, and every human being a liar. As it is written:

“So that you may be proved right when you speak

and prevail when you judge.”

CSBChristian Standard Bible

Absolutely not! Let God be true, even though everyone is a liar, as it is written:

That you may be justified in your words

and triumph when you judge.

NLTNew Living Translation

Of course not! Even if everyone else is a liar, God is true. As the Scriptures say about him,

“You will be proved right in what you say,

and you will win your case in court.”

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

May it never be! But let God be true but every human being a liar, just as it is written,

“In order that you may be justified in your words,

and may prevail when you are judged.”

KJV 1900King James Version

God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged.
