Footnotes

  1. 15 Heb “the majesty of the sea.”
  2. 16 Heb “rise up.”
  3. 17 Heb “Rahab.” The name “Rahab” means “proud one.” Since it is sometimes used of Egypt (see Ps 87:4; Isa 30:7), the passage may allude to the exodus. However, the name is also used of the sea (or the mythological sea creature) which symbolizes the disruptive forces of the world that seek to replace order with chaos (see Job 9:13; 26:12). Isa 51:9 appears to combine the mythological and historical referents. The association of Rahab with the sea in Ps 89 (see v. 9) suggests that the name carries symbolic force in this context. In this case the passage may allude to creation (see vv. 11–12), when God overcame the great deep and brought order out of chaos.
  4. 18 Heb “like one fatally wounded.”
  5. 19 Heb “the world and its fullness, you established them.”
  6. 20 Tabor and Hermon were two of the most prominent mountains in Palestine.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

You are ruling the surging of the sea.

When its waves rise, you yourself still them.

You yourself crushed Rahab like one who is slain;

you scattered your enemies with your strong arm.

The heavens are yours, the earth yours as well,

the world with its fullness, because you founded them.

North and south, you created them;

Tabor and Hermon shout joyfully over your name.

KJV 1900King James Version

Thou rulest the raging of the sea:

When the waves thereof arise, thou stillest them.

Thou hast broken Rahab in pieces, as one that is slain;

Thou hast scattered thine enemies with thy strong arm.

The heavens are thine, the earth also is thine:

As for the world and the fulness thereof, thou hast founded them.

The north and the south thou hast created them:

Tabor and Hermon shall rejoice in thy name.
