31:19How great is your favor,32

which you store up for your loyal followers!33

In plain sight of everyone you bestow it on those who take shelter34 in you.35

31:20You hide them with you, where they are safe from the attacks36 of men;37

you conceal them in a shelter, where they are safe from slanderous attacks.38

31:21The Lord deserves praise39

for he demonstrated his amazing faithfulness to me when I was besieged by enemies.40

31:22I jumped to conclusions and said,41

“I am cut off from your presence!”42

But you heard my plea for mercy when I cried out to you for help.

31:23Love the Lord, all you faithful followers43 of his!

The Lord protects those who have integrity,

but he pays back in full the one who acts arrogantly.44

31:24Be strong and confident,45

all you who wait on the Lord!

Footnotes

  1. 32 Or “How abundant are your blessings!”
  2. 33 Heb “for those who fear you.”
  3. 34 “Taking shelter” in the Lord is an idiom for seeking his protection. Seeking his protection presupposes and even demonstrates the subject’s loyalty to the Lord. In the psalms those who “take shelter” in the Lord are contrasted with the wicked and equated with those who love, fear, and serve the Lord (Pss 2:12; 5:11–12; 34:21–22).
  4. 35 Heb “you work [your favor] for the ones seeking shelter in you before the sons of men.”
  5. 36 The noun רֹכֶס (rokhes) occurs only here. Its meaning is debated; some suggest “snare,” while others propose “slander” or “conspiracy.”
  6. 37 Heb “you hide them in the hiding place of your face from the attacks of man.” The imperfect verbal forms in this verse draw attention to God’s typical treatment of the faithful.
  7. 38 Heb “you conceal them in a shelter from the strife of tongues.”
  8. 39 Heb “blessed [be] the Lord.”
  9. 40 Heb “for he caused his faithfulness to be amazing to me in a besieged city.” The psalmist probably speaks figuratively here. He compares his crisis to being trapped in a besieged city, but the Lord answered his prayer for help. Verses 19–24 were apparently written after the Lord answered the prayer of vv. 1–18.
  10. 41 Heb “and I, I said in my haste.”
  11. 42 Heb “from before your eyes.”
  12. 43 A “faithful follower” (חָסִיד, khasid) is one who does what is right in God’s eyes and remains faithful to God (see Pss 4:3; 12:1; 16:10; 31:23; 37:28; 86:2; 97:10).
  13. 44 The participial forms in the second and third lines characterize the Lord as one who typically protects the faithful and judges the proud.
  14. 45 Heb “be strong and let your heart[s] be confident.”

ESVEnglish Standard Version

Oh, how abundant is your goodness,

which you have stored up for those who fear you

and worked for those who take refuge in you,

in the sight of the children of mankind!

In the cover of your presence you hide them

from the plots of men;

you store them in your shelter

from the strife of tongues.

Blessed be the Lord,

for he has wondrously shown his steadfast love to me

when I was in a besieged city.

I had said in my alarm,

“I am cut off from your sight.”

But you heard the voice of my pleas for mercy

when I cried to you for help.

Love the Lord, all you his saints!

The Lord preserves the faithful

but abundantly repays the one who acts in pride.

Be strong, and let your heart take courage,

all you who wait for the Lord!

NIVNew International Version (2011)

How abundant are the good things

that you have stored up for those who fear you,

that you bestow in the sight of all,

on those who take refuge in you.

In the shelter of your presence you hide them

from all human intrigues;

you keep them safe in your dwelling

from accusing tongues.

Praise be to the Lord,

for he showed me the wonders of his love

when I was in a city under siege.

In my alarm I said,

“I am cut off from your sight!”

Yet you heard my cry for mercy

when I called to you for help.

Love the Lord, all his faithful people!

The Lord preserves those who are true to him,

but the proud he pays back in full.

Be strong and take heart,

all you who hope in the Lord.

CSBChristian Standard Bible

How great is your goodness,

which you have stored up for those who fear you.

In the presence of everyone you have acted

for those who take refuge in you.

You hide them in the protection of your presence;

you conceal them in a shelter

from human schemes,

from quarrelsome tongues.

Blessed be the Lord,

for he has wondrously shown his faithful love to me

in a city under siege.

In my alarm I said,

“I am cut off from your sight.”

But you heard the sound of my pleading

when I cried to you for help.

Love the Lord, all his faithful ones.

The Lord protects the loyal,

but fully repays the arrogant.

Be strong, and let your heart be courageous,

all you who put your hope in the Lord.

NLTNew Living Translation

How great is the goodness

you have stored up for those who fear you.

You lavish it on those who come to you for protection,

blessing them before the watching world.

You hide them in the shelter of your presence,

safe from those who conspire against them.

You shelter them in your presence,

far from accusing tongues.

Praise the Lord,

for he has shown me the wonders of his unfailing love.

He kept me safe when my city was under attack.

In panic I cried out,

“I am cut off from the Lord!”

But you heard my cry for mercy

and answered my call for help.

Love the Lord, all you godly ones!

For the Lord protects those who are loyal to him,

but he harshly punishes the arrogant.

So be strong and courageous,

all you who put your hope in the Lord!

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

How abundant is your goodness

that you have stored up for those who fear you,

that you perform for those who take refuge in you

before the children of humankind.

You will hide them in the protection of your presence

from the plots of man.

You will hide them in a shelter from the strife of tongues.

Blessed is Yahweh,

because he has worked marvelously his loyal love to me

in a besieged city.

As for me, I said in my alarm,

“I am cut off from before your eyes.”

However you heard the voice of my supplications

when I cried to you for help.

Love Yahweh, all you his faithful ones.

Yahweh preserves the faithful

but repays abundantly the one who acts arrogantly.

Be strong and let your heart show strength,

all you who wait for Yahweh.

KJV 1900King James Version

Oh how great is thy goodness, which thou hast laid up for them that fear thee;

Which thou hast wrought for them that trust in thee

Before the sons of men!

Thou shalt hide them in the secret of thy presence from the pride of man:

Thou shalt keep them secretly in a pavilion from the strife of tongues.

Blessed be the Lord: for he hath shewed me his marvellous kindness in a strong city.

For I said in my haste, I am cut off from before thine eyes:

Nevertheless thou heardest the voice of my supplications when I cried unto thee.

O love the Lord, all ye his saints:

For the Lord preserveth the faithful,

And plentifully rewardeth the proud doer.

Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart,

All ye that hope in the Lord.
