ס (Samek)

119:113I hate people with divided loyalties,143

but I love your law.

119:114You are my hiding place and my shield.

I find hope in your word.

119:115Turn away from me, you evil men,

so that I can observe144 the commands of my God.145

119:116Sustain me as you promised,146 so that I will live.147

Do not disappoint me!148

119:117Support me, so that I will be delivered.

Then I will focus149 on your statutes continually.

119:118You despise150 all who stray from your statutes,

for they are deceptive and unreliable.151

119:119You remove all the wicked of the earth like slag.152

Therefore I love your rules.153

119:120My body154 trembles155 because I fear you;156

I am afraid of your judgments.

Read in Logos
Psalm 119:114: You are my hiding place and my shield; I hope in your word.

Footnotes

  1. 143 Heb “divided ones.” The word occurs only here; it appears to be derived from a verbal root, attested in Arabic, meaning “to split” (see *סֵעֵף). Since the psalmist is emphasizing his unswerving allegiance to God and his law, the term probably refers to those who lack such loyalty. The translation is similar to that suggested by L. C. Allen, Psalms 101–150 (), .
  2. 144 The cohortative verbal form with vav (ו) conjunctive indicates purpose/result after the preceding imperative.
  3. 145 The psalmist has already declared that he observes God’s commands despite persecution, so here the idea must be “so that I might observe the commands of my God unhindered by threats.”
  4. 146 Heb “according to your word.”
  5. 147 The prefixed verbal form with vav (ו) conjunctive indicates purpose/result after the preceding imperative.
  6. 148 Heb “do not make me ashamed of my hope.” After the Hebrew verb בּוֹשׁ (bosh, “to be ashamed”) the preposition מִן (min, “from”) often introduces the reason for shame.
  7. 149 Or “and that I might focus.” The two cohortatives with vav (ו) conjunctive indicate purpose/result after the imperative at the beginning of the verse.
  8. 150 The Hebrew verb סָלָה (salah, “to disdain”) occurs only here and in Lam 1:15. Cognate usage in Aramaic and Akkadian, as well as Lam 1:15, suggest it may have a concrete nuance of “to throw away.”
  9. 151 Heb “for their deceit [is] falsehood.”
  10. 152 Traditionally “dross” (so , , ). The metaphor comes from metallurgy; “slag” is the substance left over after the metallic ore has been refined.
  11. 153 As he explains in the next verse, the psalmist’s fear of judgment motivates him to obey God’s rules.
  12. 154 Heb “my flesh.”
  13. 155 The Hebrew verb סָמַר (samar, “to tremble”) occurs only here and in Job 4:15.
  14. 156 Heb “from fear of you.” The pronominal suffix on the noun is an objective genitive.

ESVEnglish Standard Version

I hate the double-minded,

but I love your law.

You are my hiding place and my shield;

I hope in your word.

Depart from me, you evildoers,

that I may keep the commandments of my God.

Uphold me according to your promise, that I may live,

and let me not be put to shame in my hope!

Hold me up, that I may be safe

and have regard for your statutes continually!

You spurn all who go astray from your statutes,

for their cunning is in vain.

All the wicked of the earth you discard like dross,

therefore I love your testimonies.

My flesh trembles for fear of you,

and I am afraid of your judgments.

NIVNew International Version (2011)

I hate double-minded people,

but I love your law.

You are my refuge and my shield;

I have put my hope in your word.

Away from me, you evildoers,

that I may keep the commands of my God!

Sustain me, my God, according to your promise, and I will live;

do not let my hopes be dashed.

Uphold me, and I will be delivered;

I will always have regard for your decrees.

You reject all who stray from your decrees,

for their delusions come to nothing.

All the wicked of the earth you discard like dross;

therefore I love your statutes.

My flesh trembles in fear of you;

I stand in awe of your laws.

CSBChristian Standard Bible

I hate those who are double-minded,

but I love your instruction.

You are my shelter and my shield;

I put my hope in your word.

Depart from me, you evil ones,

so that I may obey my God’s commands.

Sustain me as you promised, and I will live;

do not let me be ashamed of my hope.

Sustain me so that I can be safe

and always be concerned about your statutes.

You reject all who stray from your statutes,

for their deceit is a lie.

You remove all the wicked on earth

as if they were dross from metal;

therefore, I love your decrees.

I tremble in awe of you;

I fear your judgments.

NLTNew Living Translation

I hate those with divided loyalties,

but I love your instructions.

You are my refuge and my shield;

your word is my source of hope.

Get out of my life, you evil-minded people,

for I intend to obey the commands of my God.

Lord, sustain me as you promised, that I may live!

Do not let my hope be crushed.

Sustain me, and I will be rescued;

then I will meditate continually on your decrees.

But you have rejected all who stray from your decrees.

They are only fooling themselves.

You skim off the wicked of the earth like scum;

no wonder I love to obey your laws!

I tremble in fear of you;

I stand in awe of your regulations.

KJV 1900King James Version

SAMECH.

I hate vain thoughts:

But thy law do I love.

Thou art my hiding place and my shield:

I hope in thy word.

Depart from me, ye evildoers:

For I will keep the commandments of my God.

Uphold me according unto thy word, that I may live:

And let me not be ashamed of my hope.

Hold thou me up, and I shall be safe:

And I will have respect unto thy statutes continually.

Thou hast trodden down all them that err from thy statutes:

For their deceit is falsehood.

Thou puttest away all the wicked of the earth like dross:

Therefore I love thy testimonies.

My flesh trembleth for fear of thee;

And I am afraid of thy judgments.
