51:12“I, I am the one who consoles you.33
Why are you afraid of mortal men,
of mere human beings who are as short-lived as grass?34
51:13Why do you forget35 the Lord, who made you,
who stretched out the sky36
and founded the earth?
Why do you constantly tremble all day long37
at the anger of the oppressor,
when he makes plans to destroy?
Where is the anger of the oppressor?38
Footnotes
- 33 The plural suffix should probably be emended to the second masculine singular (which is used in v. 13). The final mem (ם) is probably dittographic; note the mem at the beginning of the next word.
- 34 Heb “Who are you that you are afraid of man who dies, and of the son of man who [as] grass is given up?” The feminine singular forms should probably be emended to the masculine singular (see v. 13). They have probably been influenced by the construction אַתְּ־הִיא (’at-hi’) in vv. 9–10.
- 35 Heb “and that you forget.”
- 36 Or “the heavens” (also in v. 16). The Hebrew term שָׁמַיִם (shamayim) may be translated “heavens” or “sky” depending on the context.
- 37 Heb “and that you tremble constantly all the day.”
- 38 The question anticipates the answer, “Ready to disappear!” See v. 14.

I—I am the one who comforts you.
Who are you that you should fear humans who die,
or a son of man who is given up like grass?
But you have forgotten the Lord, your Maker,
who stretched out the heavens
and laid the foundations of the earth.
You are in constant dread all day long
because of the fury of the oppressor,
who has set himself to destroy.
But where is the fury of the oppressor?

“I, yes I, am the one who comforts you.
So why are you afraid of mere humans,
who wither like the grass and disappear?
Yet you have forgotten the Lord, your Creator,
the one who stretched out the sky like a canopy
and laid the foundations of the earth.
Will you remain in constant dread of human oppressors?
Will you continue to fear the anger of your enemies?
Where is their fury and anger now?
It is gone!

I, even I, am he that comforteth you:
Who art thou, that thou shouldest be afraid of a man that shall die,
And of the son of man which shall be made as grass;

That hath stretched forth the heavens, and laid the foundations of the earth;
