Footnotes
- 5 Grk “behold,” but this construction often means “here is/there is” (cf. ἰδού 2).
- 6 A quotation from Ps 40:6–8 (). The phrase a body you prepared for me (in v. 5) is apparently an interpretive expansion of the reading “ears you have dug out for me.”
- 7 Various phrases from the quotation of Ps 40:6 in Heb 10:5–6 are repeated in Heb 10:8.
- 8 The majority of , especially the later ones (א2 0278vid 1739 𝔐 lat), have ὁ θεός (ho theos, “God”) at this point, while most of the earliest and best witnesses lack such an explicit addressee (so 𝔓46 א* A C D K P Ψ 33 1175 1881 2464 ). The longer reading is a palpable corruption, apparently motivated in part by the wording of Ps 40:8 (39:9 ) and by the word order of this same verse as quoted in Heb 10:7.
- 9 Or “abolishes.”

You were not pleased with burnt offerings
or other offerings for sin.
Then I said, ‘Look, I have come to do your will, O God—
as is written about me in the Scriptures.’ ”
First, Christ said, “You did not want animal sacrifices or sin offerings or burnt offerings or other offerings for sin, nor were you pleased with them” (though they are required by the law of Moses). Then he said, “Look, I have come to do your will.” He cancels the first covenant in order to put the second into effect.

KJV 1900King James Version
In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure. Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God. Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law; Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second.
