Read in Logos
Hebrews 1:13–14: And to which of the angels has he ever said, “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet”? Are they not all ministering spirits sent out to serve for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation?

Footnotes

  1. 28 You founded the earth … your years will never run out. In its original setting Ps 102:25–27 refers to the work of God in creation, but here in Hebrews 1:10–12 the writer employs it in reference to Christ, the Lord, making a strong argument for the essential deity of the Son.
  2. 29 The words “like a garment” (ὡς ἱμάτιον, hōs himation) are found in excellent and early (𝔓46 א A B D* 1739) though absent in a majority of witnesses (D1 Ψ 0243 0278 33 1881 𝔐 lat sy bo). Although it is possible that longer reading was produced by overzealous scribes who wanted to underscore the frailty of creation, it is much more likely that the shorter reading was produced by scribes who wanted to conform the wording to that of Ps 102:26 (101:27 ), which here lacks the second “like a garment.” Both external and internal considerations decidedly favor the longer reading, and point to the author of Hebrews as the one underscoring the difference between the Son and creation. The phrase like a garment here is not part of the original OT text (see note above); for this reason it has been printed in normal type.
  3. 30 A quotation from Ps 102:25–27.
  4. 31 The parallel phrases to which of the angels in vv. 5 and 13 show the unity of this series of quotations (vv. 5–14) in revealing the superiority of the Son over angels (v. 4).
  5. 32 A quotation from Ps 110:1.
  6. 33 Grk “sent for service for the sake of those.”

ESVEnglish Standard Version

And,

“You, Lord, laid the foundation of the earth in the beginning,

and the heavens are the work of your hands;

they will perish, but you remain;

they will all wear out like a garment,

like a robe you will roll them up,

like a garment they will be changed.

But you are the same,

and your years will have no end.”

And to which of the angels has he ever said,

“Sit at my right hand

until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet”?

Are they not all ministering spirits sent out to serve for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation?

NIVNew International Version (2011)

He also says,

“In the beginning, Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth,

and the heavens are the work of your hands.

They will perish, but you remain;

they will all wear out like a garment.

You will roll them up like a robe;

like a garment they will be changed.

But you remain the same,

and your years will never end.”

To which of the angels did God ever say,

“Sit at my right hand

until I make your enemies

a footstool for your feet”?

Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?

CSBChristian Standard Bible

And:

In the beginning, Lord,

you established the earth,

and the heavens are the works of your hands;

they will perish, but you remain.

They will all wear out like clothing;

you will roll them up like a cloak,

and they will be changed like clothing.

But you are the same,

and your years will never end.

Now to which of the angels has he ever said:

Sit at my right hand

until I make your enemies your footstool?

Are they not all ministering spirits sent out to serve those who are going to inherit salvation?

NLTNew Living Translation

He also says to the Son,

“In the beginning, Lord, you laid the foundation of the earth

and made the heavens with your hands.

They will perish, but you remain forever.

They will wear out like old clothing.

You will fold them up like a cloak

and discard them like old clothing.

But you are always the same;

you will live forever.”

And God never said to any of the angels,

“Sit in the place of honor at my right hand

until I humble your enemies,

making them a footstool under your feet.”

Therefore, angels are only servants—spirits sent to care for people who will inherit salvation.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

And,

“You, Lord, laid the foundation of the earth in the beginning,

and the heavens are the works of your hands;

they will perish, but you continue,

and they will all become old like a garment,

and like a robe you will roll them up,

and like a garment they will be changed;

but you are the same, and your years will not run out.”

But to which of the angels has he ever said,

“Sit down at my right hand,

until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.”

Are they not all spirits engaged in special service, sent on assignment for the sake of those who are going to inherit salvation?

KJV 1900King James Version

And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands: They shall perish; but thou remainest; and they all shall wax old as doth a garment; And as a vesture shalt thou fold them up, and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail. But to which of the angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool? Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?
