Footnotes

  1. 13 Following the imperative, the cohortative (with the prefixed conjunction) indicates purpose or result.
  2. 14 The cohortative, with the prefixed conjunction, also expresses logical sequence. See vv. 4, 19, 27.
  3. 15 In her report to Jacob, Rebekah plays down Isaac’s strong desire to bless Esau by leaving out נַפְשִׁי (nafshi, “my soul”), but by adding the phrase “in the presence of the Lord,” she stresses how serious this matter is.
  4. 16 Heb “listen to my voice.” The Hebrew idiom means “to comply; to obey.”
  5. 17 Heb “to that which I am commanding you.”
  6. 18 Following the imperative, the cohortative (with the prefixed conjunction) indicates purpose or result.
  7. 19 The form is the perfect tense with the vav (ו) consecutive. It carries forward the tone of instruction initiated by the command to “go … and get” in the preceding verse.
  8. 20 The form is the perfect with the vav (ו) consecutive; it carries the future nuance of the preceding verbs of instruction, but by switching the subject to Jacob, indicates the expected result of the subterfuge.
  9. 21 Heb “so that.” The conjunction indicates purpose or result.

Go to the flock and take two good young goats from it for me, and I will prepare them as tasty food for your father, just as he likes. Then you must take it to your father and he will eat it so that he may bless you before his death.”

KJV 1900King James Version

Now therefore, my son, obey my voice according to that which I command thee. Go now to the flock, and fetch me from thence two good kids of the goats; and I will make them savoury meat for thy father, such as he loveth: And thou shalt bring it to thy father, that he may eat, and that he may bless thee before his death.
