6:1Children,1 obey your parents in the Lord2 for this is right. 6:2“Honor your father and mother,”3 which is the first commandment accompanied by a promise, namely, 6:3“that it may go4 well with you and that you will live5 a long time on the earth.”6
6:4Fathers,7 do not provoke your children to anger,8 but raise them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
6:5Slaves,9 obey your human masters10 with fear and trembling, in the sincerity of your heart as to Christ, 6:6not like those who do their work only when someone is watching11—as people-pleasers—but as slaves of Christ doing the will of God from the heart.126:7Obey13 with enthusiasm, as though serving the Lord14 and not people, 6:8because you know that each person, whether slave or free, if he does something good, this15 will be rewarded by the Lord.
6:9Masters,16 treat your slaves17 the same way,18 giving up the use of threats,19 because you know that both you and they have the same master in heaven,20 and there is no favoritism with him.
Footnotes
- 1 The use of the article τά (ta) with τέκνα (tekna) functions in a generic way to distinguish this group from husbands, wives, fathers and slaves and is left, therefore, untranslated. The generic article is used with γύναῖκες (gunaikes) in 5:22, ἄνδρες (andres) in 5:25, δοῦλοι (douloi) in 6:5, and κύριοι (kurioi) in 6:9.
- 2 B D* F G as well as a few versional and patristic representatives lack “in the Lord” (ἐν κυρίῳ, en kuriō), while the phrase is well represented in 𝔓46 א A D1 Ivid Ψ 0278 0285 33 1739 1881 𝔐 sy co. Scribes may have thought that the phrase could be regarded a qualifier on the kind of parents a child should obey (, only Christian parents), and would thus be tempted to delete the phrase to counter such an interpretation. It is unlikely that the phrase would have been added, since the form used to express such sentiment in this Haustafel is ὡς τῷ κυρίῳ/Χριστῷ (hōs tō kuriō/Christō, “as to the Lord/Christ”; see 5:22; 6:5). Even though the witnesses for the omission are impressive, it is more likely that the phrase was deleted than added by scribal activity.
- 3 A quotation from Exod 20:12 and Deut 5:16.
- 4 Grk “be.”
- 5 Grk “will be.”
- 6 A quotation from Deut 5:16.
- 7 Or perhaps “Parents” (so , ). The plural οἱ πατέρες (hoi pateres, “fathers”) can be used to refer to both the male and female parent ( πατήρ 1.b).
- 8 Or “do not make your children angry.” παροργίζω states “make angry.” The Greek verb in Col 3:21 is a different one with a slightly different nuance.
- 9 Traditionally, “Servants” (). Though δοῦλος (doulos) is often translated “servant,” the word does not bear the connotation of a free individual serving another. notes that “ ‘servant’ for ‘slave’ is largely confined to Biblical transl. and early American times … in normal usage at the present time the two words are carefully distinguished” ( ). The most accurate translation is “bondservant” (sometimes found in the for δοῦλος), in that it often indicates one who sells himself into slavery to another. But as this is archaic, few today understand its force.
- 10 Grk “the masters according to the flesh.” In the translation above, the article τοῖς (tois) governing κυρίοις (kuriois) is rendered in English as a possessive pronoun (i.e., “your”) and the prepositional phrase κατὰ σάρκα (kata sarka) is taken as modifying κυρίοις (indicating that the author is referring to human masters) and not modifying the imperative ὑπακούετε (hupakouete, which would indicate that obedience was according to a human standard or limitation).
- 11 Grk “not according to eye-service.”
- 12 Grk “from the soul.”
- 13 Though the verb does not appear again at this point in the passage, it is nonetheless implied and supplied in the English translation for the sake of clarity.
- 14 Grk “serving as to the Lord.”
- 15 The pronoun “this” (τοῦτο, touto) stands first in its clause for emphasis, and stresses the fact that God will reward those, who in seeking him, do good.
- 16 Here καί (kai) has not been translated because of differences between Greek and English style.
- 17 Though the Greek text only has αὐτούς (autous, “them”), the antecedent is the slaves of the masters. Therefore, it was translated this way to make it explicit in English.
- 18 Grk “do the same things to them.”
- 19 Grk “giving up the threat.”
- 20 Grk “because of both they and you, the Lord is, in heaven …”

Bondservants, obey your earthly masters with fear and trembling, with a sincere heart, as you would Christ, not by the way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but as bondservants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart, rendering service with a good will as to the Lord and not to man, knowing that whatever good anyone does, this he will receive back from the Lord, whether he is a bondservant or is free. Masters, do the same to them, and stop your threatening, knowing that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and that there is no partiality with him.

NIVNew International Version (2011)
Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise—“so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.”
Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.
Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ. Obey them not only to win their favor when their eye is on you, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart. Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people, because you know that the Lord will reward each one for whatever good they do, whether they are slave or free.
And masters, treat your slaves in the same way. Do not threaten them, since you know that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no favoritism with him.

NLTNew Living Translation
Children, obey your parents because you belong to the Lord, for this is the right thing to do. “Honor your father and mother.” This is the first commandment with a promise: If you honor your father and mother, “things will go well for you, and you will have a long life on the earth.”
Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger by the way you treat them. Rather, bring them up with the discipline and instruction that comes from the Lord.
Slaves, obey your earthly masters with deep respect and fear. Serve them sincerely as you would serve Christ. Try to please them all the time, not just when they are watching you. As slaves of Christ, do the will of God with all your heart. Work with enthusiasm, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. Remember that the Lord will reward each one of us for the good we do, whether we are slaves or free.
Masters, treat your slaves in the same way. Don’t threaten them; remember, you both have the same Master in heaven, and he has no favorites.

Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;) That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth. And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.
Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ; Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart; With good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men: Knowing that whatsoever good thing any man doeth, the same shall he receive of the Lord, whether he be bond or free. And, ye masters, do the same things unto them, forbearing threatening: knowing that your Master also is in heaven; neither is there respect of persons with him.
