8:12Even though a sinner might commit a hundred crimes48 and still live a long time,49
yet I know that it will go well with God-fearing people50—for they stand in fear51 before him.
8:13But it will not go well with the wicked,
nor will they52 prolong their53 days like a shadow,54
because they55 do not stand in fear56 before God.
8:14Here is57 another58 enigma59 that occurs on earth:
Sometimes there are righteous people who get what the wicked deserve,60
and sometimes there are wicked people who get what the righteous deserve.61
I said, “This also is an enigma.”
Footnotes
- 48 Heb “does evil one hundred [times].”
- 49 Heb “and prolongs his [life].”
- 50 Heb “those who fear God.”
- 51 Heb “they fear.”
- 52 Heb “he.”
- 53 The word “their” does not appear in the Hebrew text, but is supplied in the translation for smoothness.
- 54 The phrase “like a shadow” (כַּצֵּל, katsel) modifies the verb (“prolong”) rather than the noun (“days”). Several English versions misconstrue the line: “he will not prolong his days, [which are] like a shadow” (, ); “the man who does not fear God is like a shadow” (); and “he will not prolong his shadowy days” (). It should be rendered “he will not prolong his days like a shadow” (, , , , ). Unlike a shadow that lengthens at sunset, the wicked do not normally live long.
- 55 Heb “he.”
- 56 Heb “they do not fear.”
- 57 Heb “there is.” The term יֶשׁ (yesh, “there is”) is often used in aphorisms to assert the existence of a particular situation that occurs sometimes. It may indicate that the situation is not the rule but that it does occur on occasion, and may be nuanced “sometimes” (Prov 11:24; 13:7, 23; 14:12; 16:25; 18:24; 20:15; Eccl 2:21; 4:8; 5:12; 6:1; 7:15 [2×]; 8:14 [3×]).
- 58 The word “another” does not appear in the Hebrew text, but is supplied in the translation for clarity and smoothness.
- 59 Or “vanity” (again at the end of this verse). The Hebrew term הֶבֶל (hevel) here denotes “enigma,” that is, something that is difficult to understand. This sense is derived from the literal referent of breath, vapor or wind that cannot be seen; thus, “obscure; dark; difficult to understand; enigmatic” (see I הֶבֶל; 210–11 I הֶבֶל). It is used in this sense in reference to enigmas in life (6:2; 8:10, 14) and the future which is obscure (11:8, 10).
- 60 Heb “to whom it happens according to the deeds of the wicked”; or “who are punished for the deeds of the wicked.”
- 61 Heb “to whom it happens according to the deeds of the righteous”; or “who are rewarded for the deeds of the righteous.”

ESVEnglish Standard Version
Though a sinner does evil a hundred times and prolongs his life, yet I know that it will be well with those who fear God, because they fear before him. But it will not be well with the wicked, neither will he prolong his days like a shadow, because he does not fear before God.
There is a vanity that takes place on earth, that there are righteous people to whom it happens according to the deeds of the wicked, and there are wicked people to whom it happens according to the deeds of the righteous. I said that this also is vanity.

NIVNew International Version (2011)
Although a wicked person who commits a hundred crimes may live a long time, I know that it will go better with those who fear God, who are reverent before him. Yet because the wicked do not fear God, it will not go well with them, and their days will not lengthen like a shadow.
There is something else meaningless that occurs on earth: the righteous who get what the wicked deserve, and the wicked who get what the righteous deserve. This too, I say, is meaningless.

CSBChristian Standard Bible
Although a sinner does evil a hundred times and prolongs his life, I also know that it will go well with God-fearing people, for they are reverent before him. However, it will not go well with the wicked, and they will not lengthen their days like a shadow, for they are not reverent before God.
There is a futility that is done on the earth: there are righteous people who get what the actions of the wicked deserve, and there are wicked people who get what the actions of the righteous deserve. I say that this too is futile.

NLTNew Living Translation
But even though a person sins a hundred times and still lives a long time, I know that those who fear God will be better off. The wicked will not prosper, for they do not fear God. Their days will never grow long like the evening shadows.
And this is not all that is meaningless in our world. In this life, good people are often treated as though they were wicked, and wicked people are often treated as though they were good. This is so meaningless!

LEBThe Lexham English Bible
Although the sinner does evil a hundred times and prolongs his life, yet I also know that it will be good for those who fear God—because they fear his presence. But it will not go well with the wicked, and they will not prolong their days, like the shadow; because there is no fearing God’s presence. There is a vanity that happens on earth: sometimes the righteous suffer what the wicked deserve, and sometimes the wicked receive what the righteous deserve. I said, “This also is vanity!”

KJV 1900King James Version
Though a sinner do evil an hundred times, and his days be prolonged, yet surely I know that it shall be well with them that fear God, which fear before him: But it shall not be well with the wicked, neither shall he prolong his days, which are as a shadow; because he feareth not before God.
There is a vanity which is done upon the earth; that there be just men, unto whom it happeneth according to the work of the wicked; again, there be wicked men, to whom it happeneth according to the work of the righteous: I said that this also is vanity.
