Footnotes

  1. 25 Or “testify against.”
  2. 26 Heb “house.”
  3. 27 These words are spoken to either the unidentified heralds addressed at the beginning of v. 9, or to the Egyptians and Philistines (see v. 9b). Another possibility is that one is not to look for a specific addressee but rather appreciate the command simply as a rhetorical device to grab the attention of the listeners and readers of the prophetic message.
  4. 28 Traditionally, “the God of hosts.”
  5. 29 Heb “in the day.”
  6. 30 Heb “his.” With the referent “Israel” here, this amounts to a collective singular.
  7. 31 Traditionally, “transgressions, sins,” but see the note on the word “crimes” in .
  8. 32 Heb “punish” (so , ).
  9. 33 For location see ; ; ; ; .
  10. 34 The horns of an ancient altar projected upwards from the four corners and resembled an animal’s horns in appearance. Fugitives could seek asylum by grabbing hold of these corners (see Exod 21:14; 1 Kgs 1:50; 2:28). When the altar’s horns were cut off, there would be no place of asylum left for the Lord’s enemies.
  11. 35 Heb “the winter house along with the summer house.” Like kings, many in Israel’s wealthy class owned both winter and summer houses (cf. 1 Kgs 21:1, 18; Jer 36:22). For a discussion of archaeological evidence relating to these structures, see P. King, Amos, Hosea, Micah, 64–65.
  12. 36 Heb “houses of ivory.” These houses were not made of ivory, but they had ivory panels and furniture decorated with ivory inlays. See P. King, Amos, Hosea, Micah, 139–48.
  13. 37 Or “many,” cf. “their many rooms.”
  14. 38 The translation assumes the form is from the Hebrew verb סָפָה (safah, “to sweep away”) rather than סוּף (suf, “to come to an end”), which is the choice of most versions. Either option effectively communicates the destruction of the structures.

Listen and testify against the house of Jacob—

this is the declaration of the Lord God,

the God of Armies.

I will punish the altars of Bethel

on the day I punish Israel for its crimes;

the horns of the altar will be cut off

and fall to the ground.

I will demolish the winter house

and the summer house;

the houses inlaid with ivory will be destroyed,

and the great houses will come to an end.

This is the Lord’s declaration.

NLTNew Living Translation

“Now listen to this, and announce it throughout all Israel,” says the Lord, the Lord God of Heaven’s Armies.

“On the very day I punish Israel for its sins,

I will destroy the pagan altars at Bethel.

The horns of the altar will be cut off

and fall to the ground.

And I will destroy the beautiful homes of the wealthy—

their winter mansions and their summer houses, too—

all their palaces filled with ivory,”

says the Lord.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

“Listen and testify against the house of Jacob,” declares my Lord Yahweh, the God of hosts. “For on the day I punish Israel for its transgression, I will also punish the altars of Bethel and the horns of the altar will be cut off and fall to the ground. I will ruin the winter house as well as the summer house, and the houses of ivory will perish and the great houses shall come to an end,” declares Yahweh.

KJV 1900King James Version

Hear ye, and testify in the house of Jacob,

Saith the Lord God, the God of hosts,

That in the day that I shall visit the transgressions of Israel upon him

I will also visit the altars of Beth-el:

And the horns of the altar shall be cut off,

And fall to the ground.

And I will smite the winter house with the summer house;

And the houses of ivory shall perish,

And the great houses shall have an end, saith the Lord.
