3:9Know for sure that I will then enable
the nations to give me acceptable praise.32
All of them will invoke the Lord’s name when they pray,33
and will worship him in unison.34
3:10From beyond the rivers of Ethiopia,35
those who pray to me36 will bring me tribute.
3:11In that day you37 will not be ashamed of all your rebelliousness against me,38
for then I will remove from your midst those who proudly boast,39
and you will never again be arrogant on my holy hill.
3:12I will leave in your midst a humble and meek group of people,40
and they will find safety in the Lord’s presence.41
3:13The Israelites who remain42 will not act deceitfully.
They will not lie,
and a deceitful tongue will not be found in their mouth.
Indeed, they will graze peacefully like sheep43 and lie down;
no one will terrify them.”
Footnotes
- 32 Heb “Certainly [or perhaps, “For”] then I will restore to the nations a pure lip.” I will then enable the nations to give me acceptable praise. This apparently refers to a time when the nations will reject their false idol-gods and offer genuine praise to the one true God.
- 33 Heb “so that all of them will call on the name of the Lord.”
- 34 Heb “so that [they] will serve him [with] one shoulder.”
- 35 Or “Nubia”; Heb “Cush.” “Cush” is traditionally assumed to refer to the region south of Egypt, i.e. Nubia or northern Sudan, referred to as “Ethiopia” by classical authors (not the more recent Abyssinia).
- 36 Heb “those who pray to me, the daughter of my dispersed ones.” The meaning of the phrase is unclear. Perhaps the text is corrupt at this point or a proper name should be understood. For a discussion of various options see Adele Berlin, Zephaniah ( 25A), . It is not certain if those who pray to me refers to the converted nations or to God’s exiled covenant people.
- 37 The second person verbs and pronouns are feminine singular, indicating that personified Jerusalem is addressed here.
- 38 Heb “In that day you not be ashamed because of all your actions, [in] which you rebelled against me.”
- 39 Heb “the arrogant ones of your pride.”
- 40 Heb “needy and poor people.” The terms often refer to a socioeconomic group, but here they may refer to those who are humble in a spiritual sense.
- 41 Heb “and they will take refuge in the name of the Lord.” Safety in the Lord’s presence. From the time the Lord introduced his special covenant name (Yahweh) to Moses, it served as a reminder of his protective presence as Israel’s faithful deliverer.
- 42 Or “the remnant of Israel.”
- 43 The words “peacefully like sheep” are supplied in the translation for clarification.

“For at that time I will change the speech of the peoples
to a pure speech,
that all of them may call upon the name of the Lord
and serve him with one accord.
From beyond the rivers of Cush
my worshipers, the daughter of my dispersed ones,
shall bring my offering.
“On that day you shall not be put to shame
because of the deeds by which you have rebelled against me;
for then I will remove from your midst
your proudly exultant ones,
and you shall no longer be haughty
in my holy mountain.
But I will leave in your midst
a people humble and lowly.
They shall seek refuge in the name of the Lord,
those who are left in Israel;
they shall do no injustice
and speak no lies,
nor shall there be found in their mouth
a deceitful tongue.
For they shall graze and lie down,
and none shall make them afraid.”

“Then I will purify the lips of the peoples,
that all of them may call on the name of the Lord
and serve him shoulder to shoulder.
From beyond the rivers of Cush
my worshipers, my scattered people,
will bring me offerings.
On that day you, Jerusalem, will not be put to shame
for all the wrongs you have done to me,
because I will remove from you
your arrogant boasters.
Never again will you be haughty
on my holy hill.
But I will leave within you
the meek and humble.
The remnant of Israel
will trust in the name of the Lord.
They will do no wrong;
they will tell no lies.
A deceitful tongue
will not be found in their mouths.
They will eat and lie down
and no one will make them afraid.”

For I will then restore
pure speech to the peoples
so that all of them may call
on the name of the Lord
and serve him with a single purpose.
From beyond the rivers of Cush
my supplicants, my dispersed people,
will bring an offering to me.
On that day you will not be put to shame
because of everything you have done
in rebelling against me.
For then I will remove
from among you your jubilant, arrogant people,

They will pasture and lie down,
with nothing to make them afraid.

“Then I will purify the speech of all people,
so that everyone can worship the Lord together.
My scattered people who live beyond the rivers of Ethiopia
will come to present their offerings.
On that day you will no longer need to be ashamed,
for you will no longer be rebels against me.
I will remove all proud and arrogant people from among you.
There will be no more haughtiness on my holy mountain.
Those who are left will be the lowly and humble,

KJV 1900King James Version
For then will I turn to the people a pure language,
That they may all call upon the name of the Lord,
To serve him with one consent.
From beyond the rivers of Ethiopia
My suppliants, even the daughter of my dispersed, shall bring mine offering.
In that day shalt thou not be ashamed for all thy doings,
Wherein thou hast transgressed against me:
For then I will take away out of the midst of thee them that rejoice in thy pride,
And thou shalt no more be haughty because of my holy mountain.
I will also leave in the midst of thee an afflicted and poor people,
And they shall trust in the name of the Lord.
The remnant of Israel shall not do iniquity, nor speak lies;
Neither shall a deceitful tongue be found in their mouth:
For they shall feed and lie down, and none shall make them afraid.
