11You make worthless plans and everything you do is useless. My spirit is like a fire that will destroy you.u 12You will crumble like rocks burnt to make lime, like thorns burnt to ashes. 13Let everyone near and far hear what I have done and acknowledge my power.”
14The sinful people of Zion are trembling with fright. They say, “God’s judgement is like a fire that burns for ever. Can any of us survive a fire like that?”

You conceive chaff; you give birth to stubble;
your breath is a fire that will consume you.
And the peoples will be as if burned to lime,
like thorns cut down, that are burned in the fire.”
Hear, you who are far off, what I have done;
and you who are near, acknowledge my might.
The sinners in Zion are afraid;
trembling has seized the godless:
“Who among us can dwell with the consuming fire?
Who among us can dwell with everlasting burnings?”

You conceive chaff,
you give birth to straw;
your breath is a fire that consumes you.
The peoples will be burned to ashes;
like cut thornbushes they will be set ablaze.”
You who are far away, hear what I have done;
you who are near, acknowledge my power!
The sinners in Zion are terrified;
trembling grips the godless:
“Who of us can dwell with the consuming fire?
Who of us can dwell with everlasting burning?”

NLTNew Living Translation
You Assyrians produce nothing but dry grass and stubble.
Your own breath will turn to fire and consume you.
Your people will be burned up completely,
like thornbushes cut down and tossed in a fire.
Listen to what I have done, you nations far away!
And you that are near, acknowledge my might!”
The sinners in Jerusalem shake with fear.
Terror seizes the godless.
“Who can live with this devouring fire?” they cry.
“Who can survive this all-consuming fire?”

Ye shall conceive chaff, ye shall bring forth stubble:
Your breath, as fire, shall devour you.
And the people shall be as the burnings of lime:
As thorns cut up shall they be burned in the fire.
Hear, ye that are far off, what I have done;
And, ye that are near, acknowledge my might.

Fearfulness hath surprised the hypocrites.
