Mark is unavailable, but you can change that!

Understood today as the first written gospel, Mark seems to be the most direct and straightforward account of Jesus’ life. In his verse-by-verse commentary, Ralph P. Martin brings out the power of this eminently practical and persuasive Gospel. Martin emphasizes how Mark’s Gospel is a story of action—as encouraging and compelling today as when it was written.

We recall how this gospel opens with the theme of God’s kingdom soon to be set up. The first word Jesus uttered in public promised that God’s rule over human lives in an ideal society was near (1:14–15). His parables were all about the kingdom’s presence and power (chap. 4). Yet there was deep misunderstanding. This little pericope (10:13–16) illustrates the sort of people that can enter God’s realm, since they understand its appeal. The kingdom belongs to the childlike.
