CHAP. 3 1. והנ׳ היה ע׳ וגו׳. “Now the serpent was more crafty than all the beasts of the field”; vid. Ges. § 117. 1. So Vulg. callidior, and LXX. φρονιμώτατος, and similarly Onk. and Saad., but Symm. and Aq. render it by πανοῦργος “wicked”, Ps.-Jon. הַכִּים לְבִישׁ “wise as regards evil”; Syr. ܥܰܪܝܺܡ, which means both “crafty” and “wicked”. אף כי for האף כי, “is it even so that God has said?” Has God really said? Onk. בְּקוּשְׁטָא אֲרֵי אֲמַר יְיָ “is it true that God has said”? and so Ps.-Jon.
